While windows 8.1 isn't perfect, I don't see a reason to upgrade to Windows 10

Well, in XP they were virtual desktops - so it ate a lot of resources, but they did work well if you had the system resources to throw at it.

Indeed, DirectX12 is going to be fantastic. Can't wait to see what developers unleash with it.

Vista is actually a great OS, Windows 7 (NT 6.1) at it's core is basically Windows Vista (NT 6.0) with a few UI improvements. Vista gets got a bad rap for a few reasons.
    • Windows Longhorn (first announced in 2004) was an OS built entirely on the .NET Framework. Microsoft was so invested in .NET that they thought they could be an OS on top of it. Well, performance took a huge hit and after many years of development it was scrapped. To keep from losing billions, Microsoft built Vista in about 10 months.
    • Driver support was the downfall of Vista. Due to it's fast development time, hardware partners had very little time to develop drivers for it. After about six months of release, Vista ran like a champ.
    • This was when most new systems made the switch from IDE to SATA, many of you may remember the "please load your controller drivers to continue with installation" screen during the install. Back then there weren't universal SATA drivers built into Windows, so without those drivers - people had terrible times installing Vista.
Microsoft made a lot of mistakes with Vista, but at it's core - the OS was great... and it's heart (NT 6.0) lived all the way until today in Windows 8.1 (NT 6.3).

I am going to miss the charms bar as well, but I understand their reasoning for removing it.

Media Center just wasn't used (by less than 2% of Windows 8 users last I read). They carried it over with Windows 8 and offered free license keys for it for the first year or so, but with apps like Plex and integration with Xbox One there are just better options than Media Center these days. Microsoft wants the Xbox One to be your set top box.

The carrier exclusives just boggle my mind. If Microsoft wants to be a player in the mobile market all of their devices need to be available on all carriers. I'm hoping that exclusives go out the window with Windows 10.

I also understand why they have held off releasing a flagship with Windows 10 on the horizon, but it sucks for their brand when no flagships will have been released for nearly two years upon Windows 10 for mobile's launch.

wait the charms are gone? I can't use the touch screen with 1-2 swypes to quickly get to settings / airplane mode / wifi / search?

I'm at a new job and was forced onto Win7 after having 8 and 8.1 forever... I really really miss the boot speed, overall processing speed on a similar machine, and speed of accessing things (i.e. via the charms bar).

The charms are only gone on desktops and laptops. If you have a tablet then the charms will be either.

The feature microsoft is using is called continuum, which means windows 10 will look at your hardware and determine the best experience for you. Tablets NEED the charms bar so it will be there.

Desktop users will have to use the start menu and contextual menus for the applications that require charms.

Windows 8 is garbage. For the "tablet" user, it works fine.

I am by no means an Apple fan, however Microsoft is terrible. What chaps my hide are the significant changes from one version to another. Its fine if everyone was allowed to upgrade and the whole world was on the same version. Having several flavors of each version and multiply that with all the versions out there, it gets messy.

I wouldn't mind paying a fair subscription fee that keeps it updated.
