I can't wait for the new Starcraft to come out. Finally, they're are doing it! Sometime next year, I believe.
My god photoblue11, all those images bring back such great memories. I'm sorry, but even as a "young" person of only 25 years, I cannot fathom the "greatest year for gaming" not being from sometime in the 80s and early to mid 90s. Gaming today is much more of a niche thing than it was back then. I mean, if a game was really good then, EVERYONE was playing it, not just teens, college kids, and geeks. I mean Mario, Tecmo, SF2, Mortal Kombat, Sonic, TMNT, Simpsons, Tetris, Doom, DD... Those games really had impacts on all of society, not just the group currently known as "gamers." don't get me wrong, I love the games of today, epecially Halo/Madden/Wii, but their overall impact on everyone just pales in comparison to those games of yesteryear.
Who could forget Jacko's game on Sega. I loved it. http://www.gameplayer.it/retrogame/immagini/michael_jackson_s_moonwalker_1.jpg Also:
If you're talking about the most impactful games, I would agree. But the problem with those years is the lack of quantity. I know many would disagree, but I think that if games like Mario, street fighter, mortal kombat(games I used to pretty much memorize everything about) were made today, with everything up to today's standard, they wouldn't be nearly as memorable as they were then. Because there are simply too many competitors of the same genre. And gamers won't be playing the same game over and over. They'd simply buy a new game after playing these.
1997 Mario 64 (yeah, I know late '96...) Final Fantasy 7 But more importantly, the year emulation really started taking off. Something we take for granted nowadays is the availability of the classics. Back in the day, you'd have to go to a place like Funcoland and pay out the ass for older games or pray that you could find them at flea markets.
Man, I was wondering when someone would bring up emulators....like ZSNES, Genecyst, Ultra 64, Bleem, and etc.
one day....haha. i remember one game when it looked like my friends would win and i lifted all my buildings (terrans) and hid them. i pumped out a ton of marines and eventually overtook both of them. lol. a fun tactic is rushing nukes with terrans. i would usually wipe out their main base with two nukes back to back and have my teammates attack them when they rebuild. the custom player maps owned on sc + wc3. i forgot which one was my favorite on sc, but dota (defense of the ancients) is the most popular one on wc3.
This year hasn't been bad. I've enjoyed Age of Empires 3 Warchiefs (I think I got that this year) and Call of Duty 4...and Bioshock, which for some reason I haven't beaten yet.
Man, we used to be all over those back in high school. Zsnes, Genecyst, and Nesticle were most popular. Wow, that was like 7-8 years ago...seems like just yesterday.
That reminds me, what are some good games to play for the genesis? I went the NES->SNES->PS1 route, so I'm sure I missed out on some good genesis(and later saturn and whatever else Sega came out) games.
Sonic Streets Of Rage Shining Force General Chaos The Haunting Vectorman Golden Axe Chakan Ecco The Dolphin Zero Wing (all your base are belong to us!) Rocket Knight Adventures Gunstar Heroes Sega exclusives weren't as deep what Nintendo was churning out at the time, but they provided a lot of great pick-up-and-play experiences.
