Which sport requires more skill? Basketball or soccer?

Soccer is a sport? You mean like volleyball?

 

Completely different set of skills. Both require a lot of skill to be good at. One you use your feet as the controller and the other you use your hands. Basketball is like a horizontal version of soccer.

If soccer players had shooting skills they wouldn't end up scoreless.
If they had handles they wouldn't turn the ball over every possession.

Eye hand coordination is the hallmark of the human species, why play a game without your hands?

 

You have to be SMART to play soccer well and make it to the MAJOR leagues. For basketball, you only have to be tall or fast.

Our hands are prob the most responsive and intuitive body part we have so def soccer. Most of are greatest achievements in art were created by hands. Music, paintings, structures, inventions, etc.

 

even elite soccer players always look like they are going into spasms when they handle the ball.

I play both quite a bit and they both require about the same effort of skill. I will say this, footwork in basketball is almost as important as it is in soccer. You don't use your hands at all in soccer.

 

Actually, sir, YOU DO, if you are a goalkeeper OR if you throw it in from the touch line after it goes out of bounds.

We were CLOSE to doing HANDS-LESS Football a few years back when FIFA tested the kick-in instead of throw in an underage tournament. I forgot when it was.

Well trophies aside, I was speaking in terms of pure hatred. Even his 80's hair pissed me off.

 

They are different skill sets, but having played both sports I think you have to be in way better shape to be able to play competitive basket ball. The reason why you cant just dominate by being more athletic in soccer is because of the stupid offside rule. I never understood the purpose of that rule, other than to negate speed. You don't have to guard someone with superior speed, all you have to do is make sure they are behind the last defender. Makes the game slow and boring. Thats like saying you cant throw a full court pass to your teammate beause he beat everyone down the court. Besides soccer is boring as hell to watch most of the time it is either 0-0 or 1-0.

 

The opposite is actually true. Without the offside rule, even a slow player could just lurk near the opponent's goal all the time, and all you would see would be kick and rush...long passes to the guy who lurks up front. With the offside rule, the forward has to be faster than the defender, because he cannot start closer to the goal when the ball is passed than the last defender.

 

I always thought as a competitive sport basketball have too much luck factors.

Think about it, for 2 point field goals:

Poor: below 35%
Decent: around 40%
Good: above 45%
Great: above 50%

Even when shooting completely uncontested 2 pointers (free throw), the average percentage is like 75%


3 point field goals:
Poor: below 25%
Decent: around 30%
Good: above 35%
Great: above 40%

Even when the best 3 point shooters shoot completely uncontested shots (in the all-star competition) they still miss like half of their shots.

If my 3 point shooting was god like 50%, and I shoot 3 shots, my chance of making all three is just as great as missing all three. And that alone is a 9 point difference.

 

Not sure if accurate but I heard a fact thrown around that for a soccer player, the chances of going pro & playing for Manchester United is 1 in 300 million.
