FWIW, this was the same take from a recent pod with Chad Ford and David Thorpe. They just don't like KPJ and Green together because their skill/weaknesses are too overlapping - I gotta agree. I'm not sure he is big enough to be a 3 though. I was almost hoping KPJ could be used more like a young Lou Williams or something - instant offense off the bench but not a great facilitator because frankly, we don't have a lot of weapons to chip in shots off the bench anyway.
...kind of like that time we scored Trevor Ariza thinking he would be one of several promising new signings and then nothing went to plan(Tmac got hurt) and we foolishly attempted to turn Ariza into our feature offensive player only to watch him dribble the ball off his leg or take a contested fade away every other possession for 70 games before trading him.
With the NBA going small ball you dont have to be that big to be a 3 you just have to play defense and hit open shots unless you are a superstar who is asked to do more. It is far more likely that KPJ's defense will improve than him all of sudden becoming one of the leagues best point guards which is what it will take for him to look good in the current offense where he has to initiate everything. Here is a link to Adelmans offense with the kings. Jalen and KPJ would both be highly effective in this offense even without a starting point guard because we have two bigs in Sengun and Wood who can hit the open mid range jumper while the 1, 2 and 3 positions are asked to cut. Tate and KMJ would also both be highley effective in this system IMO. This would allow for enough spacing for wings to get to the rim and double screens at the top for Jalens open 3's. In this offense I would have Jalen at the 1 KPJ 2 Tate 3 Wood 4 Sengun 5
I love it. I can easily imagine Sengun working out of the high post on that team, with a bit more experience. One of the things I liked about the video is that Daniel was showing the intelligent plays, whether the Kings scored or not. I just don't see many set plays from our team at all. Sure, we have several 19 year old guys running around trying to figure things out on the fly, but surely we should be seeing more evidence of structure in the offense. No?
What? We can't have these positive threads during a losing streak... For me almost all tbh - I do with Green were further along, but he is getting there. DD
I can’t believe how disappointing Wood has been so far this year. He worked so hard last season, and this year he just seems like a completely different dude. I’d say he’s the biggest disappointment so far. Gordon has probably been our best player. Better trade him fast!
Yup KPJ and green have been redundant so far. Unless both learn to become spot up shooters it kills the offense having one of them stand on the perimeter doing nothing. Then on defense it’s even worse. I think it’s affecting everyone’s play, including wood. Not that he would be doing amazing otherwise. Also this team has no point guards aside from retirement age DJA. How many rosters in the history of the nba have been constructed like that? You can’t possibly be successful I would think.
The roster is so completely bizarre. We have a bunch of scoring guards and centers. And that’s pretty much it....
This is why we have problems we need this top of offensive philosophy to challenge defenses. This takes complex decision making out of the mix and keeps defenses honest while producing better shots
What happened to curls and off ball action? Everyone grows up wanting to be an on ball scorer. I think this is an indictment of our youth programs. Be it high school, AAU, or college, too many kids coming into the league totally incapable of moving off the ball and finding easy buckets. It’s all about making an “ohhhh” play. God I sound like my friggin dad now…
Clutch is the best, but everyone makes mistakes. (I guarantee he smirked when he added Danuel to this list.)
Yup, when you dont have a pass first pg guard or a superstar playmaker, you make your offense about movement so that it wont be all on one person who is not equipped to run an offense that way. Silas thinks KPJ is Luka.
