Charlie Ward for back-up. If not for the money, and knee surgery pending... NJ is lookin' into dealing J Kidd.
I originally posted this in another thread concerning the Eric Snow possibility: I've never understood the ongoing love affair between many on this bbs and Eric Snow. If my recent visit with several Sixers faithful was any indication, Philly would love to issue Snow a first class ticket out of town. It's not about his contract ... It's about his lack of game. Snow can pass the ball, but that's it. With as many shots as Iverson puts up, the PG feeding him's gonna get some assists. And turnovers are less likely when you're passing around the perimeter. The Detroit Pistons proved, en route to being crowned World Champions, that basketball is indeed a 5 on 5 game. Playing 4 on 5 on either side of the floor, defensive or offensive, is not a recipe for success. Eric Snow is not an offensive threat. No team of greatness has ever started a player with such a liability. Not everyone must be a star, but every player has to be a threat. That being said, I offer the following list of less heralded players available that I feel are more complete or have greater upside than Eric Snow: Juan Dixon - A player that nobody seems to want, but has a winning pedigree and a great basketball spirit in the mold of Sam Cassel. The kid's a winner and a leader, and he's about the team. If you're familiar with his story, you may find he'd be a great addition to our team. Bob Sura - We all witnessed firsthand what he could do against the Rox, and that was with a bunch of scubs by his side. He's an all around guard. Lindsay Hunter - He's a monster on defense. He's quick, handles the ball well, and shoots from outside well. Troy Hudson - If he and TMac have a solid history, and if he can evolve his game into more control (A la Chauncey) he could be the greatest fit for the Rox. Another guard with all around game. Rafer Alston - He's somewhat the player SF3 was supposed to be. His evolution from Street King to an NBA player has been very impressive (No love from the street, because he's NBA now ... no love from the NBA, because he's just a street baller). I think he's coming along quite well. JVG will be a great teacher and director towards honing the PG skills of whoever we choose (Don't sleep on Gaines). I just think we're shortchanging ourselves with Eric Snow. We can do better, Houston.
The Pistons are the exception, not the rule. Bruce Bowen featured on the Spurs championships. The Lakers are all about star power, and were dysfunctional all the time. Chicago Bulls and Dennis Rodman? You can have one guy who's not very good offensively, as long as he's efficient. Eric Snow is not my first option, but I'm saying it's very possible to win with a player like him. Philly made the NBA Finals with him at PG.
I agree with you a to a slight extent, Sane. The star power definitely makes it easier. But everybody's gotta be able to contribute. Rodman was a monster on the boards for offensive putbacks and also got a lot of weakside layups. Bruce Bowen was a bonfide 3 Point Threat. I absolutely like your choice of being efficient on offense. With Yao in the post and TMac diving inside, I think it's gonna be very important for our guards to hit open outside shots (A la JJ). However, Snow has never had an opportunity to run pick and roll. He may actually be quite serviceable. His midrage shot is pretty solid, but I'm not sure of his ability to slash through the lane and dish or finish at the rim.
I definitely agree with you. However, Steve had no midrange or long range game last season, a poor ass/to ratio, and wasn't a GREAT defender although he tried very hard. Again, I don't think Snow is the best option. But he is an option. It just means there are more shots for T-Mac and Yao. However, we need another 3-pt threat besides JJ. Snow is NOT that. There are some doubts, but I think Snow could pull it off, especially if he's backed up by a Tyronne Lue or Troy Hudson. However, as mentioned earlier, I'd much rather have Antonio Daniels.
I'm sad about it too... but You gotta think of it, as not losing a PG in SF3, but as gaining a new team in the east to root for. It'll be okay.
Barry... 6'6 point guard with Great vision, Solid offensive game, good rebounder. His just a solid player!
Look, I don't mean to be negative or anything, but can you think of even one starting point that Brent Barry could guard off the top of your head? Because I can't. I love his offense. Everyone does. But he would give up all those points on the other end if we played him at the 1.
I can see you're point all Valid points!. but Considerng the Options left, it's out of Fisher or Barry?. Forget Hudson , too eraic, Van exel wont optout of his remaining year so basicly comes to Fisher or Barry!. I'll go with barry!
Daniels is not a Starting type caliber, but Arroyo clearly is!. But is he any better then barry on Defense?. But Considering His young and Talented i would gladly take a risk on him!
Get Snow!! He's old, but he's good now. Yao & TMac will stay in houston for 10 years. We can change pg every couple years. Get someone who's playing the best NOW.
The list as of now, looks like this from the Rockets perspective: 1. Charlie Ward 2. Derek Fisher 3. Eric Snow (if Chad Ford was right) 4. Brent Barry 5. Troy Hudson In my personal opinion, the list should be like this... 1. Eric Snow It's scary how he and Brian Grant, to me, are players that fit directly in the mold of a JVG-type player. He would compliment T-Mac on defense and be able to hit the 15 footer...good floor general... 2. Derek Fisher This fit would be classic if he signs...Fisher is the prototypical point guard for the team CD and JVG are building...excellent role player...quick, perimeter threat (3pt.), knows how to play with a versatile shooting guard and a dominant center... 3. Brent Barry Man, this would be a nice fit for Barry...tall point guard who can shoot lights out...can drive and has amazing hops, even after he left his prime...has a knock on him for not playing defense...personally, I think he could play the passing lanes pretty nice with his long body... 4. Rafer Alston This would be dope...but I don't see it happening...is happy in Miami...which makes him coming here to weird... imagine this... SVG: hey, Jeff, so Rafer wants to know if you want him on your team? JVG: sure SVG: well, I'll let him go if you let me sign Yao in a couple of summers... JVG: mother#$%^er
After reading the Sonics comments about Barry and Daniels, I don't think we have much of a chance of getting either one. I would try though - if nothing else, it wrecks their cap more. That leaves me hoping for Arroyo or ?. But please no Snow, Fisher or Ward.
Derick Fisher- veteran, good spot up shooter, good decision maker. need his leadership and experience neg. injuries / age We really need a solid point guard who can defend, play smart and distribute, hit the open shot.
