    This probably doesn't help:

Xenu (pronounced /ˈziːnuː/[1][2][3]), also Xemu, was, according to the founder of Scientology and science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard, the dictator of the "Galactic Confederacy" who, 75 million years ago, brought billions[4][5] of his people to Earth in a DC-8-like spacecraft, stacked them around volcanoes and killed them using hydrogen bombs.

Nor does the fact that according to many different sources, Hubbard also stated that the best way to make a million dollars is to start a religion. And then he started a religion and made a lot of money...

Mr Brightside, I believe you should research Scientology before commenting on its sanity.

    1) Scientology was created by a science fiction writer. Pretty big red flag huh?
    2) Scientology was made for the express purpose of making L Ron rich (he said so, even though scientologists will deny this).
    3) Much of its teachings are circular and meaningless. They sound good, but the "true meaning" is always hidden behind another book, another class that you must buy before you understand.
    4) The e-meter. You should do some research on this piece of crap which is just a galvanometer that's repackaged and sold for thousands of dollars.
    5) Techniques flat don't work, or are something you could have done already, but they teach you to believe it's something amazing and powerful. If it doesn't work, they make you believe it's your own fault for not doing things correctly.

Now, it may have been a sane proposition for L Ron, whose only goal in it was to make himself rich. However, while it may be a very good business for whoever's making money at the top, I can't say that it's a sane religion at all.

Scientology was created to make a guy rich or powerful.

Hmmmm...sounds like a couple of other religions too.

    Fits right in.

Jesus and the Church in the first century were living it up..hanging from crosses and thrown to lions. It was a sweet, sweet ride.

Hey, Captain sensitive, do you think I meant Christianity?

I don't think Jesus did that, but some of the people after him surely have......in the name of Christianity.

Jim Jones, David Koresh....and don't get me started on the Popes and their armies back in the middle ages etc....

    :) Captain Sensitive is awesome.

I wasn't trying to be defensive to your post. Just the first thing I thought of when I read it.

Oh please DaDa. MadMax called you out for your (yet again) obvious attack on religions of the world and you resorted to minor cults. Mentioning the Pope was a nice, subtle (not!) attempt to take a shot at Catholicism.

I wish you would do everyone a favor and stay out of religion threads. You don't need to piss all over them for us to know you think they belong in the toilet.

Justxyank, this entire area is one big old pissing match, why should I stay out of it when I see people who believe spouting their views/propaganda.

And the "Captain sensitive" bit was 100% tongue in cheek, I think Max understood it...maybe it should have been directed at you?

    Commadore Sensitive !

    ;)

Psst....tell me about the Pope's armies whiping out the Cathars in France....

I don't understand why you, or anyone else for that matter, automatically equates religion to God. A person can easily believe in God/gods/whatever and not be religious. Because in general, religions assume the following are all true about God.

    1. God actually cares about us.
    2. God actually do things that affect us.
    3. God actually listens to us
    4. God actually created a world just for us to live in after we depart from our mortal realm, whether it be temporary or permanent depending on what you believe.

There could very well be a deity who is omnipotent and omnipresent by our standard. But if said deity's actions are not influenced by us worshipping him, studying the words in which he bestowed upon us, and live our life just the way he likes it, then these religions are still absurd.

Personally, I believe the first 3, but I still think religion is absurd.

I personally find it absurd that people think they have to listen to someone else to figure out what God wants you to do. He doesn't need a proxy to communicate with you. If he wanted you to have a user's manual, it wouldn't be ambiguous and up for interpretation.

Everything that we need is inside of us and around us. Religion just gets in the way of listening and observing.

If people in general did not believe in an afterlife, it would be pretty hard to get them to fight and die for an impersonal cause.

Then again it would be pretty hard to convince them to live in a moral and altruistic manner too.

But Scientology wins the goofiest premise prize, and it's not even close. But for second place I nominate Hindu ... that's a lot of gods. Greek and Norse mythology are pretty child-like.

Nothing at all, and I never infered it did....thank you very much !

Jesus wasn't at the head of any army trying to conquer lands etc...

However the Old testament is full of religious leaders and battles.....isn't that part of it, or are we ignoring that part today?

Yet you mentioned it in this thread about the premise of religions......

Seeing as how it is documenting the times people were living in, doesn't it make sense that there would be battles? I mean, would you want a book written about modern times to pretend there wasn't war?

But again, that has noting to do with the premise of the religions. You are just bringing it up to take a shot at the religion. Again.

I think religions should be self enlightening, and I think that's missing in a lot of people, spiritual or not. Even the God worshiping kinds work that magic paradoxically.

It's self centered, or is it?

    Just,

Why do you care if someone takes a shot at religion? It has so many holes from so many shots over the years that it looks like swiss cheese.

So what? If you believe good for you, I am not bothered that you choose that path, why does it bother you so much that others look at it differently?

Yes, I think religion is made up by man to control the masses.

Yes, I think some of them like scientology are downright laughable.

Yes, I think any religion that was started as a political movement or a movement to get one person in power is also highly questionable.

I mean, can't we all talk to God ourselves?

I do believe there is a God, I just think arguing over who is more right in their mythological look at it is silly and has run its' course for mankind.

Or, maybe we can all go back to the Greek Gods, they were down here on earth slumming with the regular peeps occassionally.....

    That sounds pretty cool.

What bothers me is that you continually show disrespect and disdain for things that many other people believe in. Beyond just having such disrespect and disdain, you use every opportunity on this board to voice your feelings (like you do on every single topic)

It gets old and it ruins threads. It's hard to have genuine debate and discussion when you constantly jump in on religion threads to offer your sniping and insults and general disrespect.
