I would have voted Rolling Stones if it was offered as an option, or Townes Van Zandt, or Bo Diddley or Lighnin' Hopkins or Guy Clark or Willie Nelson or Johnny Cash...and still, my CD catalog has something from every artist on this list.

But of the remaining options, VU is the easiest choice.

All edge, not afraid to stand up to play the bass drum with hammers, sing about fellatio and drugs, avoid hooky pop music cliches, or throw in a screeching viola. Much is said about Lou Reed, but the band as a unit was a collection of very likable misfits. The sound was very stripped down and was a great foil to the overproduced trend at the end of the 60's that led us down the slippery slope to the 70's blandness that is the Eagles and the advent of "soft rock", and instead took us instead towards glam, punk, and the post-punk music that made people both re-examine the roots of rock and roll and inject new enthusiasm into it.

Of course, they are also responsible for inspiring some of the WORST bands that ever picked up instruments, and needlessly anti-social behavior. My first experiment with MDMA and an electric guitar had me playing "Heroin" in muted open chords for 8 hours through a cheap fuzz pedal until neighbors pelted my apartment with eggs through the open windows. But I have to admit, it was extremely liberating.

The Beatles are great, but a great deal tarnishes their legacy, IMHO, and the best songwriting of any of them came in the Plastic Ono works in the 70's. There was a reason they broke up and Lennon moved in a very different creative direction and I agree with much of his criticism of what the Beatles came to represent, and relate better to what he was trying to do musically in the last decade of his life.

I really love Led Zepplin, but they are in many ways another British tribute band re-inventing American blues. Jimmy Page will be the first to admit it. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it can be argued that the the Stones/Faces/Yardbirds/anything with Jeff Beck or Eric Clapton/Hendrix were as groundbreaking if not more innovative. I think Ronny Lane was a better songwriter than Page or Plant, but again, this is a matter of taste.

Wow. Wouldn't that have been cool. Yeah, but Louie Raccoon probably didn't work as well as Rocky in the song. :p
Crap, the Cats are out of the bag! :D Seriously, I wasn't thinking about personalities, just song/playing style.

Anyway (small pause after wife interruption) he's back on the guitar and that is very cool with me. I know you said that in jest, but like athletes respecting other athletes from around the world, no matter their countries politics, I truly enjoy music from anybody, from anywhere.
