Most head coaches of all sports have assistants that are molded in their own images in terms of being on the same page with the head coach and stressing the exact same philosophy, fundamentals, priorities (sticky subject with a new head coach), discipline, and a mental focus and commitment to and area of the game that the head coach excelled in and stressed as a foundation on which to build.

JVG has left a mindset, work ethic, and priority of making each possession important to the team defensively that I would like to see maintained and not forgotten with the new offensive wrinkles (motion, cutting, better passing, more fluidity) that we all, no doubt, welcome with Adelman.

In the same way that JVG picked up on Pat Riley's work ethic and commitment to defensive philosophy, priority, controlling the paint defensively, rebounding as well as transition defense and all out hustle, which of JVG's assistants would it possibly be practical to retain to keep a sense of balance and defensive continuity with the Rockets that could carry over to the new system, without encroaching on the autonomy of Adelman to pick his own staff and create the priorities and philosophy that he has every right to establish being the head coach?

I mean, is it possible that a team can keep a good defensive coach and teacher from the previous regime (JVG's) without sabotaging the control and newly implemented system of the new coach? Why can't the team have the best of both world's without giving up all of the good defensive technique and work put into the defense which will only happen with a conscious effort and keeping it a high priority (much like the balance that the Spurs have between defense and offense?)

Was it Rocket asst. Thibodeau (excuse the spelling) that was the most versed in JVG's defensive scheme or whoever it is, is retaining a coach whose expertise is opposite of the new head coach worth keeping for the sake of continuity at the expense of possibly being a devisive force on the team (creating a power struggle for the team's identity?)

Either way, I love all that Adelman brings offensively and I think he's more concerned with offensive/defensive balance than many have labeled his teams to be, considering how long he's been in the league and how close he's come to reaching the top. Who would have thought a JVG team would shoot such a high 3 point percentage and take so many 3 point attempts?

Also, does all the hustling back on transition defense, defensive rotations, fighting through picks, hustling for loose balls and defensive rebounds, clogging the paint, changing and blocking shots on the low block, and the energy needed for a tough defensive team take away significantly from the energy needed to run the floor and utilize all the motion Adelman's proposing (it obviously has to be a drain on the offense)? Can the team minimize the drain on offensive energy while maintaining being committed to staying a very high level defensive team? Can a team have it both ways (stellar defensive continuity and offensive innovation) and which (if any) of JVG's assistants could contribute to the cause of balance without taking any of Adelman's control away from the team overall? Is there anothe reknowned defensive assistant coach and teacher that Adelman could add to his staff to better maintain all the hard work that JVG has contributed to the team so tirelessly?

Not if Van Dummy had played his bench. Then the players would have had all kinds of energy to play hard nosed defense and play all out on offense.

interesting that some people think teams can't be good on both ends of the floor.

under JVG the team used so much energy playing great defense that they couldn't play offense. under adleman the reverse will happen.

playing well doesn't depend on how much a player tires himself out. players should be able to play hard on both ends of the floor.

look at the spurs. they have a great defense but somehow they find enough energy to outscore the suns...
