You have to factor in time and intensity to know which will work better. Generally, you're going to be able to go faster and use more range of motion, on a treadmill.

Run on the ground, if you can. It's much better for your mechanics, as it forces you to use more of your glutes/hams, which is a more natural movement, which means better results/performance.

How so? I think the problem a lot of people have with HIIT is that they're not aware of how much more intensity they need to put in. They rest too much in between and aren't pushing hard enough, so they get poor results.

I've done HITT for 15-16 minutes and get basically the same results as when i use to run 6 miles, which took about 45-50 mins, which is pretty much what it's suppose to be like.

Swimming is a good one. Also interval training.

P90X if you have the time and commitment

As others have said it is good to switch up your routine. Your body adjusts to certain workouts and you work more efficiently at them which means less results. If all you are going for is weight loss(fat loss) switch it up between lifting and cardio. Also lifting will not make you look like a muscle head contrary to popular belief.

My friend is stocky, has muscle left from his early 20's, but lots of flab over from the past 5 years of junk food late nights and drinking heavily with minimal physical activity. He hates running, his knees and ankles feel like they will explode when he tries to run. Can lift weights, but gets bored and eventually moves on. Is P90X the best thing for him or is that too much and he should start with P90?

    Diet, cardio, lift weights.

The most important factor is Diet. If you really want to lose weight be at a caloric deficit. General rule of thumb is Multiply your body weight X 12 and eat less calories than that. Cardio doesn't matter what you do as long as you do it for 20 minutes at least. The most important thing is about getting that heart rate up. Lift weights to cut up and look better.

Yeah P90X is fine if he can lift. There are cardio routines but if his knees and ankles can't hold his weight tell him NOT to do the plyometrics routine until he builds up enough strength to do so -- it is basically all jumping.

Mixing weight lifting with P90x is for adding more muscle or what? My friend doesn't care about looking shredded and all that, he just wants to have a thin face again and no more chipmunk cheeks. That tight skinned face.

P90X alternates between a strength day then a cardio day and the workouts are six days a week. So that way you don't lift on consecutive days and you still get good cardio in between. Three lift days a week; three cardio days a week.

If you hit the plateau that's a good problem to have but don't cheat yourself. Just remember it's a lifestyle and you have to be consistent.

If you have the dedication and will power check this out:

    Cardio does not help.
    Strength training. Weight training.
It'll fast track your metabolism and help you lose weight.
Cardio does NOT help as much!

Well i am starting to eat healthy. Anything green i see, i eat it. Buy boneless, skinless chicken breasts every week to go along with veggies. Egg whites with baby spinach and fruit. My problem is waking up early to eat breakfast. I've missed breakfast most of my life. Today i ate my breakfast at 10:30 which beats the usual 12:30. The eating right part is easy for now, till $ money becomes an issue, the getting my lazy ass up to do something is the hard part.

I am a regularly thin guy, but wanted to shed some of the after college/wedding/marriage/I'm just plain old weight. I dislike running, tried the Insanity work out, and said F that. I figured I'd try old fashioned heavy bag and it's working great for me.

It's fun since I enjoy boxing on an observational level (hahah), and some days when you really need to blow off steam it's great.

    Relatively low cost too.

p90x is not for just pure weight loss. It's more weighted towards strength training, although almost everybody loses weight too due to the cardio element to it. If you are looking for a home fitness program to lose weight, Insanity is probably a better choice (both p90x and Insanity will completely kick your ass).
