Which free agent will become a slacker after getting paid?

You didn't follow Monta much last year did you? Yeah, he was a selfish ballhog and chucked up a lot of shots, but he was incredible at scoring and defense too. I'd say he definitely didn't "slack off" last year, and the stats sort of bear that out.

 

Excellent question. It's really hard to say. You never know when a player is going to say "You know what...I've made enough money. I don't need another big pay day. I'm gonna loaf around." It may come the season after his big contract, but he may wait until a couple years into it if his team isn't winning and he can't be moved.

That being said, I think Rudy Gay has the best chance to be that guy. He is the only guy that Memphis is going to sign. Yes, Memphis had a surprisingly good year last year, but I think they played about as well as they could. There's no way that team as it is currently constructed will ever compete in the western conference. The combination of Chris Wallace being one of the worst GMs in the league and Memphis not making enough money as a team to support taking on more payroll will assure them of perpetual mediocrity. I'm guessing two more years of the Grizz hovering around .500 plus the possibility that the team relocates will be enough to make him quit caring.

 

Rudy Gay... even if he doesn't become a slacker, I don't think he'll improve to the point where he's playing up to the expectations and money that he's making.

1. Of course he's loving the attention he's receiving right now. He's been playing in Toronto. I talk to casual basketball fans who don't even know who Chris Bosh is. I can't blame the guy for enjoying having a little bit of the spotlight on him for once.

2. Of course he's worried about getting every last penny of a max deal. Guys like Lebron and Wade make double and even triple their annual salary in endorsement deals. When was the last time you saw Chris Bosh in a commercial? If you make 30-45 million a year in endorsement deals like Lebron does, then leaving 30 million over 6 years on the table isn't as big a deal (and he still may resign with the Cavs for the max). But if you're Chris Bosh, that's a really big deal. I think this 'greed' angle is getting over-played. He would be outright foolish to scoff off 30 million dollars.

I'm gonna swing for the fences on this one and say.....Tracy Mcgrady? I know he's not really known to slack very often but I can feel it, he's finally going to start slacking once he gets a new contract...

He's been slacking since his last contract. That or he was just really overrated and overhyped.

 

Not Joe Johnson. He may not live up to, or be worth his contract, but I don't think he will be a "slacker". He has a high motor so he will play well, but not Max money well.

My vote at this time is Rudy Gay. He has a lot of skills but a "low motor" and low motor translates into slacking.

 

I don't think they will slack as much as people will realize they suck. There's a difference between the two, someone like Rashard Lewis just doesn't live up to his salary (i.e. sucks) while guys like Vince Carter or Rasheed Wallace just slack off after getting paid. Sometimes you have guys who are both, which happens when you sign guys like Jerome James or Eddy Curry.

IMHO the Grizz and the Knicks will definitely regret paying these guys the max, esp. when Phx doesn't skip a beat and NY and Memphis continue being crap despite having a "max" player.

 

Chris Bosh! I still think he is over-hyped.

 

Amare will likely not be healthy for his entire contract.

 

Possibly Stromile Swift after getting paid, in China.

Btw, isn't Michael Redd a FA? Or does his contract allow him to opt out? He seems like a candidate.
