History has shown that some players after getting paid some good money have a tendency to slack off and under-perform during their first contract year.
This is the " I got paid " mentality that commentators have observed after some players noticeably dropped production after attaining their coveted contract.

It may be a combination of lack of effort and incompatibility with the system of the new team.

A few notable examples that come to mind: Borris Diaw ( after years of being a scrub was offered a large contract by phoenix then traded because of his poor performance) Ben Wallace was given a substantial contract by the Chicago Bulls but he did not live up to expectations), And more recently Monta Ellis and Hedo Turkoglu.

So the question is which players among the current free agent crop will become a slacker after getting paid?

That is very probable. My guess is Amare Stoudemire, his attitude makes him ripe for this mentality and hopefully this helps us by increasing the value of our NY picks.

He already got a monster contract and he strived to get better every year.

    Excellent question.

I'll go with Gay or Amare.

Rudy Gay but I don't really think it's his fault. I blame Memphis for giving him all that money.

Amare is my leading candidate. Especially on the defensive end. Hell his coach will applaud his decreased effort on defense.

I think if Rudy Gay went to New York or New Jersey he would have more pressure on him to do well....but in Memphis he will be stuck in mediocrity on a mediocre

    1 Rudy Gay

    2 David Lee

Both are non-impact players. In a couple of years (maybe this coming season), their teams will wonder what in the world were they thinking.

If Rudy Gay played for the Knicks, I think the intense daily spotlight would destroy him. Memphis is the ideal situation for a laid-back, off & on player like him. When he doesn't do well, nobody cares because there are no expectations on the Grizzlies, it's a tiny market and nobody outside of Memphis gives a flip about the team or Rudy Gay himself.

I think Amare will perform in terms of stats, Joe Johnson pro he had his best two seasons already.

    I would say Bosh...

He's been parading around with cameras throughout all of this.

Maybe he's just immature compared to the others. I don't think he looks at a team and thinks about the actual basketball element enough.

He's so worried about getting every last penny of a max deal...
Is winning really that important to him? Or is finding big city, big bucks, and a big stage at the top of his priority list?
