What's even funnier is that Calvin Murphy is getting as much love as James Posey..

I believe that Kelvin Cato would help fill the team's need the most. He could play alongside Yao, on nights when we need a tough inside presence, and then hopefully use a more agile player when the opposing PF was more of a moble outside threat.

    NBA General Managers

Do me a favor & click on this link, if you know your basketball, see how many ex-players are on that last. This is only only top execs, not even including coaches & assistant coaches and ex-players with other smaller roles in organizations.

You point out one example in an attempt to discredit one of the most common happenings in the NBA so I challenge you to look at the big picture next time before opening yourself to looking this foolish.

Yeah, it would be great to have Cato back so teams could leave him open again to brick more 12-15 footers.

    1. Mobley
    2. Kenny Thomas

We screwed them both over, so I doubt either would be thrilled about returning.

what if our offseason looked like this:

trade - Howard, future #1 for cassell.

    MLE - cat

    LLE - horry

trade sura and wesley for a PF.

    hire mario as an assistant.

Exactly how did we screw them over? Just by trading them?

With KT, we had a glut of PF's that at the time we thought all 3 should be in the rotation. Sure, right now KT is better than both of the other 2, but hindsight is 20/20. Griffin was supposed to be the PF of the future.

Mobley was in a deal to get a top 5 player in the game.

Just because we traded them doesn't mean we "screwed them over". Sure, they may have had their feelings hurt a little but that is part of the game...we were just trying to make the team better. Both of them are still starting and making millions of dollars in the NBA.

Mobley - he has the best present AND future promise

Cassell - was great, is still good, but struggles with injury and has a questionable future

Cato - Not a bad presence, but with Mutombo on our team, he's not really what we need.

Eddie Griffin - I will always hate him for his experiences while with the Rockets.

Horry - very good, but one must wonder about his future.

    DieHard Rocket,

Screwing them over may be a bit strong, but Mobley did take a sizable discount to stay with Houston. I'm sure he did that because he wanted to stay in Houston, and although there is nothing illegal about trading him away, it certainly played against the good will he showed us.

With Thomas, we gave Mo T the money Kenny deserved before Mo T even proved he was worth it (all he ever did was smoke herb and get hurt). Kenny worked his ass off, and apparently was told some things which led him to believe we would resign him. MoT and Griffen ended up getting all the breaks, and the hardest working Rocket, KT was shipped off. He was very bitter about that.

So, screwing them over may have been a bit harsh, but we certainly smiled and flicked them off when thier back was turned. For the record, I love the organization, and believe we are good to our players; however, these two instances are exceptions.

I know it's a business. Would I still do the Mobley trade? Yes, but I'd feel pretty guilty about it. I'd definately do what I could to get him back for the rest of his career. He was a loyal guy with the heart of a champ. He's been a Rocket the longest of anyone we've had since Hakeem.

honestly i wish we could get francis back... i personally think he got a bad wrap.... he would compliment tmac and yao very well....i know he isn't a great shooter, but he's a slasher and break down the defense, letting tmac more open 3's, and would be hard to double up on any of them...and + he's a good rebounder......... I can always dream...

Elgin Baylor. Man, what a great player he was. Probably top-10 all-time. So by extension... He MUST be a great executive!

And Isiah Thomas! One of my favorite PGs ever. Man, if there's one guy I'd want making personnel decisions for me, it would HAVE to be Isiah Thomas.

And you know what? Chris Mullin was probably the greatest college shooter EVER, and IMO still a Dark Horse candidate for the Hall of Fame. I mean, with a playing career like that, there's no way he'd give out a ridiculous contract to a marginal player as a GM!

So that Jim Paxson... IMO, a vastly underrated player. I can think of no one else who would have had the foresight to realize that Trajan Langdon was going to be a great player in this league and draft him with the 13th overall pick! And DeSagana Diop, man, how does he know how to evaluate talent like that? Not to mention that I was very impressed by his ability to put himself in position to lose Carlos Boozer.

All sarcasm aside, here's the point: If somebody does not have the qualifications to be an executive with an NBA, they have no business in the front office and are just as likely to screw up as any average joe who steps into a job without knowing what he's getting into. Mullin, Thomas, Baylor, Paxson, and Jordan have all shown that they're levels of ability as NBA GMs range from mildly incompetant to severely incompetant.

So what makes you think that A) Hakeem wants to be here as an excecutive and B) he'd be any good at it? I'm under the impression that Hakeem is perfectly happy with the life he's living right now, and IMO for fans to want him to take a job in the organization just because otherwise they don't see him very much is selfish and stupid. Our front office is fine as it is.

Oh, and by the way, your link doesn't work. Even if it had, I doubt it would have made anyone look foolish.

One, your link doesn't work. Two, I just gave the most high profile example. The NBA is littered with former players, especially former superstars, that are rather disappointing, or at best mediocre, in other roles: Magic Johnson, Isiah Thomas, Patrick Ewing, Elgin Baylor, Kevin McHale (remember the TWolves llosing 3 first-round picks), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, etc. The people who seem to do well are the second or third tier former players, like Rudy T and Phil Jackson. Maybe Hakeem would be a good coach, but even in his declining years he did not provide much help to the young guys on our team. It was Barkley that reached out to Cat and Fancy and tried to help them grow in the league. There is just no evidence that Hakeem has the ability or inclination to do anything in the NBA besides play.

EDIT: I didn't see dharocks's post before I submitted mine, but he provided a few more guys to the list.
