1) George Karl - This team wins 58-60 games next season(barring injuries) if he's their coach. 2) Jeff Van Gundy - They'd be weaker offensively but more than make up for it on the defensive end. I can live with that tradeoff. The real question is does he want to coach again. 3) Stan Van Gundy - As long as Dwight's ok with the hire, he'd be a great choice. 4) Lionel Hollins - He had a ton of success in Memphis. But he's definitely a backup choice if the others decline. 5) Tom Thibodeau - Assuming the Bulls lose in the first round and the organization lets him go, he'd be a great hire. I'd actually prefer him over anyone other than Karl if he's available.
Just because a coach is a good college coach doesn't meant they'd be a good pro coach. Bob Knight was one of the best college coaches, yet he would have been terrible in the NBA.
Jeff Van Gundy is the obvious choice. The man has 10 more billions brain cells and neurons than Kevin McFail.
Honestly none of the NBA retreads sound half as good as the top college coaches. I'm thinking of the aforementioned Gregg Marshall as well as Fred Hoiberg and coach Cal.
SVG and Dwight are on good terms again, Stan advised him during FA. SVG would be the absolute perfect fit for this roster.
Maybe marginally better, but this series would still not have gone the Rockets' way. Let's not candy coat it. The defensive problems preceded Sampson's departure. They may not have been as glaring, but they were there. And the offensive struggles have always been there and have nothing to do with Sampson. Remember, a lot of people wondered all season long what would happen come playoff time when the game slows down and you have to run more halfcourt plays. Well, we've seen the results. McHale doesn't have a f'ing clue what to do. It's just ISO, ISO, ISO.
Even the already fired Mike Woodson is better than McFail at this point. At least Woodson preach defense.
So you're saying just because a coach is a good college coach it doesn't mean they'd be a bad pro coach?
the fact that people here want callipari is a joke. okay. i'll give y'all the benefit that he's probably good with working with egos. the only reason he wins is because he get to hand-pick the best players of every graduating HS class. not because he's some phenomenal college coach. if you're looking for phenomenal college coaches, brad stevens (was) up there. Shaka smart is good. Izzo. But I dont think this team wants a college coach. thats more of a rebuilding phase.
Tom Thibodeau would be perfect for this team. We already have the offense. We really need the defensive mentality that he brings to a team. Another guy that is rumored to be out unless he gets to the ECF is Frank Vogel (same reason as Thibs). I would be fine with him as well.
