Jerry Sloan? Would he even want the job? During a Rockets Jazz game this season he was in the stands and the Jazz broadcast kept showing him. He was really out of it, almost like he had a stroke or something. It wasn't good.
can we forget about rookie head coaches? -they won't have enough experience / we are in win-now mode. -they won't be able to command respect from howard/harden forget about coaches who are against analytics taking over coaching -karl, hollins, larry brown, sloan, adelman (remember morey had to trade battier to get him to play parsons?) forget burnt bridges -JVG & thibs were fired for jack of success, but also because Les wanted an up tempo "phoenix like" offense. even if you can convince these guys to come back, Les still doesn't like their style of play on offense. who's left? -SVG -mcmillan -calipari -doug collins -vogel if he's fired... but would we want a guy who can't beat the hawks with the pacers? invest in a top assistant. someone with head coaching experience to fortify the discipline, strategy, and game preparation -woodson -frank -carlisemo
You make a good point about those first tier of coaches not giving analytics the full reign, but they are also the only ones capable of winning a title for that reason. Its impossible to quantify all the things that take place on the court and make the necessary adjustments based on the stats alone. A seasoned veteran coach will know what needs to be done and will also keep our players in check. Btw, I think you're wrong about the Adelman part, Adelman was gone before Parsons was ever drafted (to my knowledge)
you're right it was budinger, in ricks last year with us. i agree that the list of top coaches are the best one's available, karl, sloan, adelman, brown would all be fantastic albeit short term options due to their ages. hollins would be the best choice do to ability and age. he's up there with thibs and vogel. but i just don't see the team going with them for the reasons i provided. SVG is right up there, mcmillan had success as an nba head coach and is currently helping coach the pacers to the #1 defense in the league. with a top assistant next to them we would be fine. my main point is those old guys may not ever return to coaching, and if they did it would be on their terms and not morey's. not sure morey would go for that. hollins is the best of the bunch with a realistic chance, but SVG and mcmillan are not that far behind and would probably be more willing to listen to morey on certain things.
I think all 2 of your assumptions are wrong. forget about coaches who are against analytics taking over coaching forget burnt bridges Both in presumption and analysis
i like SVG. In the Sloan conference, he stated his main arguments against certain statistics that SportsVu is coming out with as lacking context. He wanted to know if the guys tallying up all these numbers actually know basketball. He strikes me as someone who would use analytics but also place them in proper context. He made a lot of sense. He's forceful, won't take **** from players. He's coached Dwight before; he's coached the 4-out 1-in system before, very successfully, in fact.
Quin Snyder is also a really interesting name. 3 years with the Spurs organization running the Toro's, 1 year under Budenholzer, spent time under Coach K and even worked with Messina. Just an all around smart basketball guy and it seems like he's matured a lot since his days at Duke. I think he could end up being very good as a head coach in the right environment.
NO, he is losing to a crappy team and is getting out coached. George Karl is the MAN. He send an average team to the playoffs last year with the 3rd seed of the western conference. Can you imagine what he can do with this Rockets' team? For me is George Karl, or I'll bring Rick Adelman back from retirement.
Specifically on JVG, since being fired by Les he has frequently talked about the Suns offense being one he wants to see succeed in the NBA. He may be adjusted at this point to where he is willing to run a more up tempo offense than he has previously run in his past stops.
