Mogadishu, no doubt. "WARNING: Mogadishu is regarded as the most lawless and dangerous city on Earth. It is not safe for leisure or tourism. If you are planning a visit for international aid work, etc, you will need expert advice and planning."
+1 Rep, the absurdity of comparing the 2 cities.... College Station is a great town, and I LOVED living there for the 5 years I was there. But comparing it to Austin...come on.... Austin, for the most part is a beautiful city, and with lots of a life. My family just purchased a house in Lake Way, looking forward to many more trips to the Austin area. I have a favorite camping spot on the lake.
COMPLETELY DISAGREE. Way to rag on CS like that, it's a great town. ......Nacogdoches is probably one of the worst places in TX...minus the border towns... insert roll eyes. I like CS...I've grown up over seas...traveled all over the place, and......pretty sane....
From childhood I was an Aggie. Family thing even. I visited College Station a few times, plus the A&M campus. Later on I went to Austin and visited UT for 2 days. Before day 1 ended I was converted over. Its not about the campuses, but considered I owned ANTI-UT shirts and such. Plenty bias going against Austin going in. It basically comes down to are you a small town guy or big city type of guy. Plus perhaps, um, "ethnic" type interests can influence the choice...
I went to A&M, and honestly I don't know what there is to like about College Station as far as the city goes. If you prefer smaller and quieter towns to metropolises then you probably would like living in College Station more, but that's just a general preference rather than a love of the city. There's plenty of nicer small towns in Texas to live in that have a lot more character. The only pedestrian friendly areas outside of campus is Northgate...the rest of it is strip malls and parking lots. And I'm not even going to talk about Bryan, TX.
College station does not have a 6th street. Some City's try to duplicate it but few succeed. Duval street in the Keys, Bourban Street in New Orleans are two that are as good or better than 6th street. Dallas used to have Deep Ellum but that area is a shell of what it used to be. Austin also has the Barton Springs, Mount Bonnell, Hippy Hollow and Lake Austin which is part of the Colorado River that runs right through Austin. And don't forget the State Capital and UT. I live in Dallas and I am jealous of all the people that get to live in Austin. Great music, great food, great weekend recreation and just a beautiful city. My younger brother and both sisters have lived there most of their adult lives and I lived there about 20 years ago we all loved it. My brother lived in college station for a couple of years as well... he could not wait to get out.
You used to able to drink outside of Northgate on the promenade. That set it apart. Not anymore though.
Uh, really? Austin by a long shot. Not even a fair comparison. College Station Tourism Website basically defaults to an A&M tour: There are a lot of sights to see and attractions to visit during your stay in College Station. Catch the game, visit the Presidential Library, and check out the live music scene in Northgate. This informational guide will help you find something that's right up your alley. If you have questions on any of these places, please contact the Bryan-College Station Convention and Visitors Bureau at (979) 260-9898 or visit their web site at www.visitaggieland.com. Best evidence for Austin is that the city doesn't completely shut down when the Longhorns play a football game. You can't say the same thing about College Station.
From your link: Independent travel is suicidal. When being escorted, it is best to be in an armored car. Infantry are highly likely to get engaged in street battles, and an armored vehicle can provide far better protection against most threats. A bullet proof vest is a must-have in Mogadishu.
Kyle Field has more seats in it than the population of College Station. So again, this is a dumb comparison.
Exactly. We had friends that lived in College Station when they worked for the Forestry Service. They used to get dirty looks when they were walking around town during the game. People working used to say "We have to be here at work. You have a choice. You should be at the game!"
Disagree. Huntsville is completely different. They stop selling alcohol at 12, there are far less establishments, none of them as nice, its just not even close really. They are completely different. About as ridiculous as Austin vs. CS.
Am I the only one who's not *that* impressed with 6th street? Maybe my expectations were too high having heard from a lot of people about how great it is, only to find that it's just a row of so-so bars. Sure, it's convenient being able to walk from bar to bar, but that's not exactly difficult to find in a lot of cities. *shrugs* Maybe I'm getting old
