I'm not particularly fond of either university. Austin by a country mile. There are actually things other than the university there.
there are plenty of aggies who live in austin. it is a city with major employers. what is in college station besides a&m?
why is every "which city is better" thread/poll always about austin? is there some kind of inferiority complex with that town?
I went to school at A&M and I still see no point to this poll. I mean, what does LIVING in College Station entail, other than the university? It's a college town.....all you do there is drink and bang college girls. Ok, so now that I think about it, let me restate my previous opinion. College Station rules!!
I wouldn't want to live at either city, but I do like the small town vibe of College Station. It's also too damn hot and too much construction in Austin.
I've been to both places, but I always feel a little more out of place in CS. Maybe its because the place is full of maroon shirts, boots, and camo hats...and I own none of these.
its also great if you like lots of parks, giant spring-fed swimming holes in the middle of downtown, a plethora of good, middle priced restaurants, bike riding, the alamo drafthouse, live music, musuems, texas history, music festivals seemingly year-round (sxsw, acl and funfunfun), ect. the only reason to visit college station was freebirds and we got those now too!
honestly, i hear more people complain about austin-elitism than i hear actual austin-elitism. im from houston and have been in austin for 15 years - i dont get the elitist, austin snob perception that others seem to always bring up - people like it here and talk it up quite a bit, but i dont see it as running down other cities (except dallas, of course, which sucks ass).
I spent plenty of time in both -- Austin by miles. Austin is a victim of its own success, and it's seen it better days before it hosted IT companies, traffic jams, SXSW, irritating hipsters and swarms of the kind of smug yuppie Californians I did my best to avoid in California. It's still a great place and I'd certainly choose it over most places I've lived. College Station is pretty spartan. It's a quiet town surrounding a a university -- I'd say it's a marginal upgrade over Huntsville, and only because of its size. It's not my kind of place, but if quiet streets, conservative cultural mores, bonfires and the Dixie Chicken is your slice of heaven, don't let consensus prevent you from living there.
Insane question. Its like asking do you prefer Compton or Switzerland. The only place more miserable in Texas than College Station is Lubbock.
Visited both CS and Austin many many times while I was in college. When my wife and I graduated from SHSU, we were trying to figure out where to go. She's from SA and didn't particularly want to live in the Houston area. I'm from The Woodlands and didn't particularly want to live in SA. Neither of us wanted anything to do with dallas. We decided to try Austin for a couple of years. That was in 1999. We now are raising our family in Round Rock and have absolutely no plans ever to leave the Austin area. College Station isn't a terrible place. I had some good times there. I just couldn't imagine living there as an adult who wasn't involved with the university in some way.
A lot of development in CS. It is basically a larger Sugar Land. Clean city, restaurants everywhere, etc... 2 theaters now. The people that chose to live there and aren't in college are family oriented. But by no means does it make sense to compare it to Austin.
They don't obviously. But when you go somewhere you don't meet and interact with each individual. The overall feel is what you have to ultimately deal with. And both towns have a distinct college feel both of which IMO become tiring pretty quickly.
