Damn right Anti. If it's 8-bit, I'm there dude. I'd also like to get absolutely plastered with Crisco and Pimp and debate RPGs.
basso and thegary: Can I talk you guys into coming down to the East Village for a few rounds on the night of the 20th or 21st? I'm passing through town then and then back again for the Dylan show the next week, but that sounds bad for thegary and I'm likely to book the later trip quickly too. In fact, I'm planning on booking both trips pretty solid in the next few days. There's a relatively new Irish pub I like down there. I think it's on 1st or A, right near St. Marks. I can get details (the address and all) in the next day or two, but the neighborhood and the date are the urgent thing. This particular bar's good for me because there's a good patio (non-smokers are welcome to the downwind seats), relatively cheap drinks and decent bar food with vegan options. It's also near where I'm staying (and the only Manhattan neighborhood I can still stand to drink in for any extended period). Other NYC posters welcome too. And I'll start a get together thread if I don't get responses from you guys in this one. Hope it works out. The Republican opera singer, the liberal Woody Guthrie fan and the Batman. What could be better?
you're a smoker and a vegan? no wonder you had no problems switching from Dean/Kucinich to kerry after the primaries! 20-21st sounds good to me- end of the month is more difficult. and btw, as long as it's woody by way of bbragg and wilco, i'm down with it too.
i like woody, billy and wilco, separately or together. i guess that means i'm down. don't know what place batman's talking about but i know the east village well and could also come up with suggestions. like you said batman, we can decide the place later. as for the 20th or 21st, either is okay. ps. sorry basso, i'm also a smoker.
I would go but I'm out of the country next week. What is the name of the place? It doesn't ring a bell even though I've been getting drunk in the EV for about 5 years straight.
you'd need a passport to come to the west side then! i like the east village as much as the next guy, but it's probably the least convenient place in the city to get to from my place. i do remember a nice vegan wine bar on 1st ave around 7th, run by a lesbian couple who grow fresh herbs on the roof. what could be more appropriate! i will miss sam tho- i guess we'll have to just wait until we can bag a 14er together...
Not to gang up too much on poor basso, but another liberal smoker who loves the east village might just drop by.
You guys should have gone to one of my favorite haunts, the Scratcher (5th & bowery). For about the first year and a half after the smoking ban, they totally ignored it, and if you tried to go smoke outside, the guy working the door would actually tell you to go smoke inside in order to keep the noise down. Last time I was in there though I don't think they were letting you smoke anymore.
they don't. a good friend of mine loves that place. i've been there four or five times and found it kinda yuppie/yahooish.
It used to be an NYU student hangout about 5-6 years ago when I first started going, but now it's changed a bit (and gotten more crowded). What I like about them is that, like all good Irish bars, a lot of the bartenders aren't stingy about giving you free rounds every so often (although now that they are crowded they don't bother as much anymore).
NYU students are the scourge of the east village. besides, scratcher isn't really even in the east village. hell, i'll go anywhere but if it were up to me i'd choose to meet in one of the old standby dive bars in the EV and move on from there.
You bastid. It'll probably take me another 28 years to get back to NYC. Actually, the fiancee's got grandparents in Philly, so when I go up there, we'll have to have a get together. Where would you recommend catching the game that Saturday (if they play that Saturday night). We're staying at the Doubletree in Times Square.
Check out McHale's on 46th and 8th. It's a good bet they'll have the games on. There's also a cool bar called the Bull Moose on 44th between 8th and 9th (closer to 9th). Very laid back and the beer prices are geared towards out of work actors.
