thanks! i found this while searching for anti-virus reviews: http://www.av-comparatives.org/comparativesreviews/main-tests i wasnt too sure about the reliability of the report, but it pretty much echoes what you said in your posts
I always joked around with people about a comment like that. A trojan is taking info off your drive and sending it back to "homebase"... your av/malware scanner doesn't detect any strange activities... you think nothing's happening, so it must be working. In the meantime, you're an unwilling participant in a DoS attack or something. Yeah, but I hear ya. I'm not saying it doesn't work. Every tool catches stuff other tools don't - nothing's perfect. Good luck.
On a side note, I was having problems with Avast a little while back and had to uninstall it, but it didn't uninstall 100%: I still have it in my task bar as an icon and a little red window keeps bottom up to tell me that the program is trying to update, but can't. I uninstalled it, used 3rd party uninstallers like CCleaner, and DL'd Avast again, installed it again, and tried to uninstall it again, with no luck. Anyone know how to get rid of the damn thing?
I'd like to add that a healthy dose of Malwarebytes' anti-malware tool about once a week should compliment any AV program.
I had Norton on my new laptop and it caused all sorts of slow down/ screen freeze problems -- took it out and replaced with AVG. No issues at all so far. Norton = resource hog
Good advice. Run 2 or 3 of those programs if you want. Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot S&D, etc.
No problem. That's actually a good site that many swear by for antivirus testing. I use it as well as other sites for making decisions about what AV software to use. The guy that runs that site unleashes thousands of malware on these virus scanners to test them and sees how they fare.
It's garbage. Get rid of it now. I suggest Avast for you and the OP. I had AVG and then I had a new virus scan I found out I ended up having 10 viruses that AVG never scanned for me. Just google avast and you should get it. It's free as well.
I haven't used anti-virus software in years. I just format my hard drive every 6 months or so if I start seeing a lag in speed.
i used avast on all of my computers. rumor has it that even microsoft programmers use avast on their machines.
Rox_fan_here, I was just thinking - you said you were using Norton 360. If you go to just an antivirus product, you may want to keep in mind you're losing out on functionality. Norton 360 is also has anti-malware/anti-spyware, firewall, and other features built into it. Just sayin'...
I pretty much reformat at least once every year too. Nice to have a quick booting system. Thanks for the avast recommendations. Like it so far.
