Maybe, but any future PG, needs to be a dual threat....you don't need a true PG to win in the NBA, you can win with combo scoring guards ala Tony Parker. DD
I don't remember anyone saying Rafer Alston was good. We all hated him when he left, we all hate him now.
I hate people like you. Where does it say on paper that point guard has to be able to create for his teammates, run the offense, etc. It is a position on the basketball court, but it doesn't define what you do. To be honest, coaches in the NBA don't care about positions, you go in the game and you play basketball according to your strengths not based on what position you play.
WHERE ALL THE SURA FANS NOW? WHERE ALL THE WESLEY FANS NOW? WHERE ALL THE WAFER FANS NOW? WHERE ARTEST FANS NOW? WHERE RUDY T AND JVG FANS NOW? WHERE ALL FANS NOW? STILL ROOTING FOR ROCKETS. THATS WHERE.
Rafer was never a good shooter and I'm sure everyone here knows it. He play well within his limitations - handling the ball and setting up teammates for shots. When he was pushed outside his abilities (shooting the jumper and creating his own shot) he struggled heavily. sometimes he was good, other times not. There is no need to bash on him or rag on him. the man played within his limitations and excelled when he did.
Van Gundy did make the terrible mistake of trying Luther Head at point guard. VSpan should have had that opportunity. Putting Brooks in earlier would have been a mistake, though. Adelman needed to give Mike James and Steve Francis a shot. They could have been nice additions. Playing Bobby Jackson so much might have been a mistake, but overall I've been happy with Rick's point guard rotation.
I see you didn't make this thread last year when Alston was helping Orlando get to the finals. I hated him while he was here, but he's long gone and both parties have had success without the other. Why hate now?
I'll show you one the many places it states a PG's responsibility From coachesclipboard.net - Basketball fundamentals he point guard is often thought of an extension of the coach on the floor, or the "quarterback", or floor general. So the point guard must have a close working relationship with the coaches and be very "coachable". He/she should have frequent discussions with the coach to know exactly what the coach expects of him/her, and what team strategies to use at a given time......Your first thought should not be scoring, but being an excellent passer and getting the ball to your teammates for easy shots. Many think that dribbling and ball-handling are the most important attributes for a good point guard, but I believe it is being an excellent passer and being able to find the open man, and when to pass and not pass. Take care of the ball, and don't throw it into a crowd. Avoid those costly turnovers. Shall I go on?
Our team as built wasn't going to win a playoff series with Rafer. I don't think I've ever gotten as pissed or thrown as many things at the tv over anything else other than rafer's plays. Dude couldn't shoot yet he would have no problem jacking up stupid floaters and 3s all game long. Anybody with common sense wouldn't even bother guarding him, that being said I was a happy man when i heard about the trade
Your going to cite a quote from an amateur coaching website? So we should trade Aaron Brooks to satisfy people like you? Unbelievable. If a point guard can score, then that is a good thing. So far, Aaron has not deterred our offense with his playstyle, he has actually increased it with his speedy play. You on the other hand want what is called a "pure point guard". Not only is that a rarity in the NBA these days, it hurts the offense. The more players on the court that can score, the merrier. See how well the Rockets fare with Andre Miller in the line-up rather than Aaron Brooks.
Awesome thread. Other topics for discussion- "Kelvin Cato still sucks!" "Where's all the Joe Barry Carroll love?"
Ok, let's go this route.. Think of ALL of the GREAT PG's in our time.. Isaiah, Magic, Nash, Kidd, Stockton, Robertson.. What is the ONE CHARACTERISTIC THEY ALL HAD IN COMMON?!?! They were ALL able to PASS THE BALL! It's very telling when Adelman has to bring Lowry off of the bench in close games, to close games out because Brooks can't.. In addition, when Brooks shot isn't falling..what use is he? He can't do ANYTHING else.. Again, Brooks scoring is great...but you'd have to be on crack if you think he is the future at PG for the rockets franchise..
It's Christmas time and let's show some love to anyone who gave his all to the Rockets. I appreciate Rafer for what he was. Nothing more and nothing less.. Much love to Skip and his followers... Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
His days were numbered after Gundy was let go. Adelman was the main reason Brooks was brought in. It was just a matter of time.
Where's all the Alston love? Maybe it's gone now because he's on a different team. You think of that OP?
Good point. OP should have used the factually correct nickname "Brick to My Lou" instead. "Rafer Madness" was a good one too. I supported and rooted for Rafer while he was the starter here, but in hindsight he was a major liability. Going from Rafer to Brooks and Lowry was like finding a $100 bill in the sofa cushions.
