In all fairness to Mike Brown, the Cavs probably overachieved last year. Front office knew it. Lebron knew it. Cavs and Pistons fans all knew it. They played good lock-down defense for 7 games, Lebron took over and there you have it. But instead of getting better in the offseason, management picks up absolutely no one. The fail to sign their own FA until well into the season, and when they do finally get back an important cog, he gets injured. Meanwhile, Detroit picks up two good draft picks and makes a heady trade getting rid of Nazr, all while Jason Maxiell continues to improve, and the Celtics ...everyone knows what they did. If Mike Brown is fired, he's being fired for Danny Ferry's ineptitude's last offseason.
I think he goes to a ready-made contender or at least a place oozing with individual talent. He has to be tired of piecing together lineups with geezers and non-skilled players. What about Atlanta? That team is in the East (where anyone can be a contender) and is loaded with young talent. There is no doubt in my mind that he could turn that team into a 50+ winner and go deep in the playoffs. Factor in the collective age of the Pistons and Celtics and you see that the East will be wide open in 2 years.
I don't think that Chicago will hire him because they just got rid of one hard nosed disciplinarian. Why would they hire another? I think the Bulls are going to go for a player's coach.
Interesting... he seems tailor made for the college game, but if the pros are pursuing, I don't know. Also seems like he would think bigger than Rice (no offense to the Owls) ... but then it's a great school and would keep him from uprooting family.
Actually, if Celtics mess it up this season, they should/will make a run at Gundy. I have alway said it, Celtics team is tailor made for Gundy style basketball.
I too always felt JVG would make an amazing college coach assuming he could recruit or got his hands on an established program (not Rice). His philosophy alone is good for 25 wins a season in the NCAA. He would be one of the greatest of all time. No gimmick Calapari offense, no gimmick Pitino defense. Just pure basketball. I think he will end up in Denver. Karl never lasts anywhere. JVG will make that team into a contender in no time. The Nene for Artest thing would give him 4 incredible defensive players (I include the highly underrated Anthony Carter) and 2 incredible offensive players. All the Nuggets need is a defensive orientation. With 2 top 3 scorers Van Gundy's trademark scoring droughts will be a thing of the past and beating the Nuggets will be damn near impossible.
i can't see gundy going to the ncaa. not when there are good spots available in the nba. coaches usually choose teams by: 1. ability to win 2. quality front office 3. players they want to coach if i were JVG i would look at: 1. bulls 2. nugz 3. cavs 4. nets
I dont give a bleep where JVG will coach. JVG wont affect the balance of power anyway. JVG better goes back to the East. Too many Western Conference coaches are "match up" problems for JVG.
