How did you get a free trip to anywhere in Europe? Take advantage of it and if it is anywhere, go to Rome and/or Spanish Coast...

LOL. Go to Spanish beaches in August. You will have to arrive at the beach at like 5:30 am to get a spot, and for the whole day you will have like 3 square feet of space to call your own, with no chance of being close to the ocean. It's not pleasant. Go to the beaches in the spring time.

As for where to go in Europe, I would go to Madrid, Barcelona, southern France, Venice and Rome, take a train through Switzerland (so beautiful), and Amsterdam.

I visited Auschwitz in 1996. One of the most important things I've ever done. TOTALLY changed my perspective on Europe and what they went through with WWII. So very intense.

The problem with a LOT of the places folks are mentioning (Spain, southern France, Switzerland, etc.) is cost. Switzerland, in particular, is god-awful expensive.

Budapest is great. Very welcoming of tourists, great nightlife, and CHEAP. Food was OK, definitely better than Polish food (sorry, guys). Prague is great, but because it's gotten to be a very trendy destination, it's not as great a deal as it used to be, and can be VERY crowded, depending on when you go.

I highly recommend Salzburg. It's a bit pricey, but gorgeous, and offers a nice blend of the traditional scenery and contemporary attractions. Day trips to towns like Rust or Hallstatt are also great fun.

    Just some quick questions:

When you don't know anybody there, or speak their language, and don't want to go with a tour group, how in the world can I make it a fun experience?

I went to Europe a couple years ago, I'd rank the countries like this...

    1. Ireland - wonderful to have a relaxing time

    2. Switzerland - beautiful, friendly people, clean and pristine, lots to do, clean, cheap, exciting, did I mention clean?

    3. Sweden/Germany

    4. Italy and France (Paris and Rome are nothing but tourist traps, if we could do it over again we wouldn't have gone there).

    You be crazy!

I've been to Paris like 10 times, it's the greatest city on Earth, no doubt about it.
