to be clear, it’s the schools that are removing these books, not the government.

Exactly, without those Florida laws, they, and other Florida school districts, wouldn't be banning books — it's just embarrassing to witness the banning of these books.

P.S. When Florida enacts laws to ban books, they are responsible for it. I'm sure you've heard of 'unintended consequences of poor legislation.' In this case, one can argue it's as designed or so poorly written in their zest to remove certain type of books that they end up removing much more. In any case, leave it up to the local school district and parental oversight. That has worked and is perfectly fine.

Sometimes it's just a simple mistake, and these companies can be overzealous (so beware of self-checkout lines). But an average of $100 per checkout over seven times is likely not just a simple mistake.

Keri Blair, 43, was arrested on 5 January for property theft charges after purportedly “skip-scanning” items at Target self-checkout stations seven different times between 25 November and 20 December, a Collierville Police spokesperson said.

The allegedly stolen items amounted to $728.61, the spokesperson added.

Not true. You could be arrested.

FL: <= $300 in retail theft - misdemeanor
SF: <= $950 in retail theft- misdemeanor
Houston: <= $2500 in retail theft - misdemeanor

If convicted of misdemeanor shoplifting, you can face jail time in all three.

Why do you post some of the most useless things? Below is an example of a much better post, though completely funny now.
