Pappa's BBQ is about the only one i though was fairly good. Im not in Houston all that often so ill have to try out some that you guys listed. So far the best i have had in TX has been in Austin with John Mueller's BBQ and Rudy's. I mainly prefer brisket and both of these places have excellent brisket along with some great spicy sauce. I have tried some of the ones in Elgin including Southside Market but im not a big fan of sasauge (which is their specialy) so I really didnt really enjoy them. The brisket there was medocre at best. The best brisket for my tastes is in KC. They tend to have better meat since they are in the midwest and they also tend to smoke it for longer. They have a local specialty called burnt ends that are really damn good. Its basically just the ends of the brisket that have a really strong smoked flavor. Though the places i listed in Austin are almost as good.
You got that right! Blakes is damn good! They have the best BBQ bakers. The best in Texas is none other than Joe Cotten's BBQ in Robstown. Anyone who regularly ventures below the Nueces can attest to this.
I was not impressed with Otto's. I also thought Cooper's in Llano was terribly overrated, although that impression was not helped by the frigging 75-minute wait.
Don't go to Cooper's at peak times (midday on weekends). Unlike a lot of bbq places, there's usually a good amount of meat left at dinner if you don't eat too late.
bejezuz!! Get a grip! The Salt Lick is fabulous, although it's gotten too damned expensive. Best BBQ in Houston? My Mom's.
No way. I'd walk to Lockhart before I'd ever drive to Driftwood for barbeque again. Maybe it was just the cheap sausage that turned me off (think Decker cheapass grocery swill), but I was not impressed.
I love Goode Co. for the jalapeno cheese bread. But I think my favorite is the Luling City Meat Market on Richmond.
Best BBQ nobody knows about. It IS unbelievable. There's a place off of Sawdust-Rayford called Country Time that's hit and miss, but when they're on, it's good. And I heard recently that Tom's in College Station was gone. That's too bad. Somebody asked what KC is known for. They say they're known for brisket. They slice it paper thin with deli slicers. It's a pathetic joke. It seems everywhere outside of Texas grills the meat and then chops it up and then drowns it in sauce. It's not that it's bad, it's just not BBQ. It's a Sloppy Joe. In the Southeast and Mid- atlantic, you can't usually even get brisket and forget links. I finally found a guy up here from Dallas that owns a piss-ant convenience store about 20 minutes away that knows what he's doing, brisket-wise. No links and I don't know where he learned to make beans, but it wasn't Dallas. It's either that or Red, Hot and Blue (which proudly serves Earl Campbell brand hot links!)
that's wild! a friend of mine does juvenile justice ministry 3 days a week. heads up to juvenile facilities up near Crockett. he stops in Huntsville every time to get that BBQ. swears by it. says there's nothing like it anywhere. he's asked me to go up a few times to meet with the kids and help with Bible study...and his "carrot" is the ribs at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Huntsville! i've never heard anyone else mention it until i read it here from you!
thanx for all the advice guys, went to Luthers the other day and it was solid, gonna go to Goode's tomorrow.
