The Democrats should be clear on a few basic issues that they keep pounding. Free tutition, higher minimum wage, combating climate change, strengthen social security, national health care. Keep these issues elections after election. The GOP can't come through on these issues with their only plan more supply side/tax breaks for billionaires. Guess what, Americans do not care about real issues for the most part. This election proves that Americans can elect anyone if given the right condition.
Americans keep voting for someone who will make changes to help them. Obama won on hope and change, which includes real issues. For many reasons Obama did not deliver. Just like the GOP rejected old status quo Bush they rejected status quo Hillary who had only her gender as a basis to suggest any change from her 25 year history of being for the status quo.

Really, very incitelful: This is the great irony to the end of Bill Clinton’s long career in politics. One of the most successful politicians of his generation having his queries dismissed by Northeastern liberals, ignored by those who believe they have successfully charted where the party ought to go. They viewed his coalition as old and unnecessary in the post-Obama era, where certainty about demographic destiny and the underlying belief that the Democratic Party really is on the right side of history allowed complacency and stagnation. They came to view these coal country white working class people as an unnecessary backwards drag on a new multicultural coalition sharing in elite sensibilities, and in so doing changed from a party that won on an “it’s the economy, stupid” message to one that lost on the message that the real problem with America is straight white men who wear trucker hats unironically.
That whole basket of deplorables mention probably cost her some votes in as much as she wrote off that segment of the population. Frankly both sides wrote them off as either automation or globalization has doomed or eliminated their jobs toward obselecence. Will be interesting to see the bald virtuoso of tax evasion jimmy those jobs back into greatness.
It can be really REALLY simple for the democratic party - Just invigorate people TO GO VOTE. The votes are still THERE in the apathetic voting pool. Democrats LOST the presidential election as much as Reps won it. In sports terms, Dems CHOKED the lead late in the 4th quarter. It doesnt mean you have to retool the entire team. Just a couple transactions,and execute the way that you're supposed to. Dems could learn QUICK from the major mistakes and DONT repeat them. Dont get complacent thinking you have everyone ready to give you a parade for your achievements for humanity. Remember to give focus to ACTUAL people, the big AND small fish. Contradictory to that, sometimes it seemed Dems in trying to please EVERYONE that they pleased NO ONE. So have to maintain some kind "Everyday People" identity instead of something too "fringy" that basic citizens don't take to ("Basket of deplorables" showed the party had a particular vision of itself and a lesser vision of regular citizens) Then the "other" things major and minor for full CULTURE change. Like don't get distracted off course by small interests and serving special constituencies that takes away sensing the soul of the people. And of course no getting caught in CORRUPTION, dirty back room deals and conflicts of interest. Results show that it DOES MATTER to people. They can be forgiving of some vices, but up to a POINT.
Your analogy compounds on why the Democrats lost. They did not lose their lead in the 4th quarter. They never had a lead. Liberalism lost, not Hillary. The Democrats are in full retreat. Republicans control the vast majority of all levels of government. Here is a better analogy; Playing a ball game in which only the score keepers know the score. Liberals are too busy listening to their own coaches and fans telling them they are winning. Do you know why Democrats are getting the crap beat out of them at the polls? The same reason the Republicans have been. They are too busy pandering to their own base. Both sides are more interested in the division than the unity. Democrats are losing because they feel two men being allowed to marry is more important than Americans having jobs. They feel like a man being allowed to enter a womans shower room is more important than jobs fleeing the country. They feel pandering to hispanic population through illegal immigration is more important than the problems the illegals cause. They are too worried about black criminals being the victim than ethical hard working police officers keeping the streets safe. When economic times are bad, social justice should be placed second.
You can not save your God forsaken party when they are filled with crooks, liars, perverts, race baiters, poverty pimps, degenerates, criminals, traitors and commies. Good luck with that!
