you that close to red hook? the original fairway is just two blocks away, so i'm there and at citerella at least 4-5 times a week. we get coffee from zabars tho.
There's a few here in Vegas, but none close to where I live. We were able to use our Kroger card when we moved here. So we're sticking with familiarity.
That's right across the street from my house. I love that store (and the fact that I can just stroll across the street to pick up a gallon of milk.)
Nothing brings guys together like a good grocery discussion. In all seriousness, the bottom line is price vs. cleanliness. Randall's appears to be clean, but I have had a few problems with meat. I have heard that Fiesta is a good place to buy meat. The produce in Randall's is ok. It's just not that large at the location I go to. On the other hand the price at Randall's would be unacceptable, if you didn't have a Randall's card. Does anyone shop without a grocery card? Is there a place that doesn't use them and has good prices? I'm new to being single and am always interested in new ways to save mulah.
The Kroger at Westheimer and Elmside (I think that's the cross street). I'd go to the TajmaHEB at Fountainview if I lived closer.
red hook is not far from park slope but we drive. they have a huge parking lot and it's built into an old warehouse on the river. they have an enclosed outdoor eating area where you can watch the boats go by, i love boats. oh, and there's the whole statue of liberty view. if you've ever been to sonny's, it's a block away. if you haven't been to sonny's, do so as it is straight out of a hopper painting but way cooler.
When I was growing up, the Onsteads lived at the end of our block, and I went to elementary school through high school with one of his daughters.
Those grocery cards really don't save customers any money. The store just jacks up the price of an item, then offers the "card price" to give people the illusion that they're saving money, when they could get the same item at the same price at another store without a card. Those shopping cards are used to help boost the sales of underperforming items, and they're also used as research and marketing tools to track what people are buying. The real savings is in the double and triple coupons. Wal Mart has price matching on every item, but you have to go through the circulars of a bunch of other stores to take full advantage, so it takes some effort.
I loooooooove Zabars, and visit the one near the Dakota every time I am in NYC. Fortunately, we can now get 99% of what is sold at Zabars here in Houston, but that has only been in the past 3 years or so. I used to have to bring an extra suitcase with me when I visited NYC just for my Zabars trip!
True. HEB is awesome. If I'm in a hurry and just need a few items I tend to go to Kroger instead though.
Austin, TX: HEB #269 on Braker & 183 IGA Minimax on Woodrow and Madison Spec's on Airport Blvd. Grapevine Market on Shoal Creek Blvd. Quality Seafood on Airport Blvd. Whole Foods Market Gateway Center Sunrise MiniMarket on Anderson Ln. and Rutgers (a.k.a. "the buddy store") all depending on needs and time-of-day/day-of-week...
Sonny's 253 Conover Red Hook Brooklyn (718) 237-8888 it's an old family-run ****hole bar that existed for years without a liquor license. it's kinda scary, in the middle of nowhere, and nearly impossible to find. it has the paraphanelia and smell of a bygone era. ruleth it does.
How dare you ask me a question like that?!?!?! That type of information is EXTREMELY personal and private, and you should be ashamed of yourself for even mentioning it!!! j/k...my wife spends about two hours a week clipping coupons from two different newspapers. She has a little coupon caddie divided up into different sections. I could never put that kind of effort into grocery shopping. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that Wal Mart doesn't offer double and triple coupons, but the regular low prices on their grocery items along with the coupons usually make up for it.
When I used to live by Gessner/Richmond, I used to go to the Walmart by Dunvale, or if it's just buying apple pies and some ready made chicken, I go to Randalls or Kroger (both of which are equally close). I used to live close to everything... not I'm here at UH in the middle of boringtown. Oh and I usually go shop at the Hong Kong markets to get my rice and other Asian stuff. HK4 baby!
Count me in the Wal-Mart club. I can't stand it. It's actually making me stressed to type about it. But it's the cheapest game in town under one roof. Since they fired all of their butchers, I stopped buying cut meat and only buy pre-packaged stuff like lunchmeat, sausage, etc. there. I shop around for butcher-cut meat otherwise.
I bought meat from Fiesta, depending on which one you go to, they're alright. But I found that their beef tend to have more fat than other places, like Walmart. I used to buy fruits from Fiesta, I think it's a little cheaper.
The WalMart foodstore by my house is OK for packaged items, but their meat and produce don't look that great. Oh, and I forgot.....for Asian groceries I go to the Hong Kong market at Bellaire and Boone Road. Nicest Asian grocery store I know of in Houston, although I have noticed a couple of new ones on Bellaire in Chinatown that I will have to check out.
