Yes let's put our heads in the sand and let it run its course and perhaps the virus will mutate into an airborne or waterborne pathogen.

Maybe if you conservatives gave a damn about the disease in its infancy then we might not have this problem now.

I think anyone who tests positive for HIV/AIDS should be given some sort of identifying mark, regardless of how they contracted the virus. There are too many people who have AIDS, and yet continue to expose others to the disease knowing full well that they have it. If we could have some mark that identified carriers, then people who choose to engage in an activity that could cause them to get AIDS could check to see if the person they are interacting with (having sex, sharing needles, becoming blood brothers, whatever) and then either take whatever extra precautions they felt were necessary or choose another partner to engage in such activity with.

Just for the record my stats are also from the CDC. The website isn't the CDC website, but the statistics they use are from the CDC.

sounds a lot like stars of david or pink triangles.
i dont think the government should be tatooing anyone, especially if they're gonna suffer from discrimination or violence afterwards because of it. doesn't seem very constitutional either.

Oh Lord, it's getting thick now. I guess you measure concern by monetary means. I strongly doubt throwing money at was and is still mostly a gay BEHAVIORAL disease would've have changed things very much. Why do we need more research when there already is a cure.......quit behaving promiscuously! Quit shooting yourself with dirty needles!

You don't engage in risky behavior, now that the blood banks have been cleaned of this disease, you don't catch it. End of story. And if it is to mutate, it will mutate whether there is more research or less. Research doesn't cause viruses to mutate, environmental conditions do. I'm so tired of being told I'm not doing enough to combat what is and always will be a BEHAVIORAL disease. These people engaging in this at-risk behavior need to take some ownership for their stupidity.

I used this same line in the redistricting thread a moment ago but it seems appropriate here, too.

    Jawol, mein Fuhrer. Sieg heil!

Jews, homosexuals, and others were forced to wear identifying marks at another time in the history of the world. Are you seriously advocating for similar practices?

how about Reagan not even saying the word AIDS till 1987? a lot of people who got it early on didn't even know what it was. money could have been spent on education or free condoms or whatever. how about the people who already have it? just let them die when there is a possibility of a cure? talk about compassionate conservatism.

there are several strains of HIV and some are more drug resistant than others. Wouldn't you rather find a vaccine before it mutates rather than after?

Well what exactly are you doing to combat this? What about people whose partners are cheating on them without their knowledge and they get infected? just forget about them too? what about all the babies being born infected with HIV? they don't deserve a cure either I guess.

Why should society pay for healthcare for people you smoke and get lung diseases or people you get cardiac problems from eating crap.

Why do I have to do anything to combat it? I've been married for nearly ten years now. I don't screw around and I don't do drugs. I live the sort of life that you are supposed to live to minimize to nearly nothing the chances of developing this disease. You don't answer my point, that this mainly a behavioral disease. I think compassion is misplaced people are warned again and again to quit ****ing around, quit sharing dirty needles and yet......they keep doing it. And they want me to pay for research into something that was THEIR fault for getting.

People think I'm heartless when I say I don't have a bit of sympathy for Magic when he first announced he had HIV. Well, he acted stupidly and forever will he pay the consequences. The sad thing about this disease that often those who acted stupidly spread it to innocents, like children or a sexual partner they've been cheating on. It's an imperfect world and unfortunately, some people are going to be infected who did not engage in these at-risk behaviors. However, their numbers are relatively small compared to the idiots who catch this virus via their own stupid, perverse behavior.

What about cancer and heart disease? What about cystic fibrosis? Are those not worthy causes for research? Oh, that's right, they don't have that powerful gay lobby behind them. I guess the squeaky wheel gets the grease after all....eh? I think we should seriously consider reinvesting our resources into something worthwhile, other than AIDS research. Besides, since the gay community is extremely wealthy as compared to the rest of population, drug companies would find it vastly profitable to research for a cure of their own accord.

Lastly, you still haven't answered my question.......how does not researching a virus make it mutate? A virus will mutate or not mutate regardless of whether some lab-coated Phd's are researching it.

It's a free country, you don't have to have sympathy for people with AIDS and you can elect people who feel the same way, but I'm free to think you are a heartless b*stard nonetheless, so let freedom ring.

If you dont do research you dont find a cure.
If you dont find a cure you run the risk of the virus mutating.
Get it? and If you don't think this is possible then read The Hot Zone.

what about my point that most new cases are young people? thats not an excuse for their behavior but perhaps they aren't as educated as you seem to think. plus young people think they will live forever anyway so they live for the day.

what makes you think we are extremely wealthy? that's a falacy.

no one is saying cut cancer research but frankly we don't really know what causes it. AIDS we know the virus that causes it so there is a greater chance of finding a cure.

Yawn. You're not going to get an argument out of me. In an ideal world, all healthcare would be privatized and I would pay far less in healthcare costs by associating myself with an insurance pool of other very low health risk indivduals.

Your diversionary tactic is noted. Cardiovascular disease is not the topic of conversation, but if that's all you are familiar with, so be it. By implication you therefore agree that homosexuals engaging in unprotected anal intercourse is irresponsible behavior. By the way, there's a big difference in those with AIDS and those with HIV. I guess that little tidbit doesn't help your argument, now does it? Didn't think so. Keep trying, it's fun to watch.

The topic of conversation was your anger at having to "bear the healthcare costs" for "irresponsible" people. I simply pointed out that if your motive was truly financial, your anger was misplaced since there is a far larger group of people whose lifestyle choices are taking a bite out of your wallet. Of course, if your anger is actually based on something other than financial concerns, I doubt any amount of rational discourse will change your mind.

Mrs JB and Jorge are both correct.

People who get AIDS should be blamed for their situation just like smokers and fatasses.

    All healthcare should be privatized.

    There- everyone is happy.

I think all hate mongers should be given some sort of identifying mark too. Talk about solving a lot of problems.

not to mention nobody would get tested if they knew they would be marked this way. will we make testing mandatory for everybody and if so how often?

Nah, 'cause it doesn't have to be visible under normal conditions. It could be like a tatoo on the bottom of a foot, a butt cheek, or some other spot normally not revealed to the public. When someone decided to engage in some risky behavior, they would then be able to ask to check for said mark. There should be no opportunities for discrimination.

If you (and Timing) really want to call me a hatemonger and a Nazi for proposing a cheap and easy measure that could save thousands of lives, that is fin by me, though why I would pick a group to hate based only on having AIDS is beyond me.

*aside* Also, although I am not proposing something all that similar to Nazi Germany's policy, not everything proposed by the Nazi's is wrong. We don't avoid rocketry and jet fighters because the Nazi's used them. */aside*

Finally, regarding who would submit to testing if faced with the prospect of a not readily apparent mark. That would be anyone that wanted to know if they had AIDS or not, a group that certainly would include those that want to receive treatment.

That's one thing that has always bother me about liberals, compassion (or sympathy in this case) to them always equals dollars; dollars taken out of someone ELSE'S pocket. It's mighty easy to be compassionate with other peoples' money. And I'm not heartless, I'm just tired of so much money being spent on something that already has a cure: change your behavior.
