They will let it deteriorate until it looks like the Roman colosseum and then charge a fee to tour the ruins.
I can’t share it because it’s behind a paywall, but there’s good info on this topic in a Houston Business Journal article from this week. Basic synopsis is: - other teams are improving stadiums…and the Texans and Rodeo are working on proposals to improve NRG - Texans say they respect the process…also, can I just say it’s a huge boon for the Texans that they are allied with the Houston Rodeo? That event, even though I haven’t gone to a rodeo since I took my high school girlfriend to see the Judds in 1991 (old af), is just massive and so widely supported in the community…apparently Bud Adams never woke up to that reality of that advantage - though admittedly that advantage has grown since he left town - cheaper to improve NRG than build a new stadium…this is a big deal because there a bunch of stadiums in the NFL where that’s not the case…but NRG is one built for improvements as opposed to replacement - sky boxes, mid level suites, and club seating are among the improvements…also in-seat concession ordering ability…party decks…and super duper Trader Jorge level premium seating that would bore my socks off (but y’all please buy ‘em so we can win a Super Bowl) - improvements to the entire Astrodome area…which would include an entertainment district to provide traffic 365 days a year…this seems to be the trend for a lot of these projects, honestly…just my opinion, but I’d bet on the Astros entertainment district over this concept just because of location and what’s going on in that area as opposed to the Astrodome area…we’ll see, I guess - public funding for these projects is getting tougher for sure…even KC voted improvements down recently…and they have the best product in the league right now. The Bears have had problems with funding new stadiums in the Chicago area as well. Public sentiment around public funding for these projects is not positive…which is, to me at least, completely understandable
Ive been waiting on this for awhile. I think Houston will support it, especially now with the Texans on the rise. And the fact that it will add to the Astrodome area is crucial. That area has been making progress the past few years. I know budgets are tight but I just don't think KC and Chicago have the economic fruition of Houston
Asbestos mitigation in a building that size is enormous. It's also coming up on 60 years old so I suspect it will eventually be torn down rather than preserved as a landmark.
The only thing they appear to be incapable of is doing is doing it on their own dollar. The poorest taxpayers MUST SUBSIDIZE BILLIONAIRES and Millionaires so they can profit on games the taxpayers can't afford to see.
I know palm trees grow here, but I seem to remember there being a problem with coconuts. Perhaps the soil or even too many days below freezing. Perhaps the difference between tropical and semi-tropical.
May have changed, may not, but it looks brilliant, and I guess the lack of roof is OK with the locals who are used to brutal summer heat/humidity. MLB should subsidize retractable roofs on all new stadiums, that's just my thought. https://ballparkdigest.com/2024/02/13/first-looks-at-the-new-downtown-royals-ballpark-renderings/
Good question. That wasn’t addressed in the article, and I haven’t read the terms of sale on those licenses before.
