How about a trade that brings in a quality bat that's not too pricey. I believe Hunsicker managed to bring in Mike Lamb and Carl Everett. Just one of the reason's why he was so great at building a contender with a limited budget.
Here's where your thinking is flawed. You are assuming that FA's prices are going to go down in the near future. You are assuming that 85 million is going to remain somewhere near the top 3rd of team salaries this season. What if that amount puts us right in the middle this season? Will that upset you in any way?
This just in - Mona Lisa was an Astros fan. http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/ten-things-i-didnt-know-a-couple-of-weeks-ago/ Now back to the Purpura bashing.
Must be baseball offseason...the usual suspects are out bashing Purpura and McClane. You think NJRocket, texx, and T_J would have learned from last year. The sky is not falling.
I think that sums it up pretty good right there. Drayton spends when he needs to. He's not a fool, and he's put a consistently winning product on the field for the better part of a decade. I'd like to see Purpura make a trade like everyone else, but NOT just for the sake of making a trade.
About the only guy out there I would want is Tejada and I hope that TP is at least talking to his agents and seeing if it would be a good fit. I dont want to make a trade just to make a trade but I would like to see certain positions upgraded. I think the jury is still out on TP and I will wait and see what he does before declaring him a bust.
ESPN News is reporting a possible 4 way deal Boston gets Tejada and something Mets get Manny and Baez D Rays get K Matsui, Seo, Heilman and something O's get Clement, Lugo and something i dont remember it exactly...but the big names is how they reported it If this is true, it blows....not only do the Mets get even stronger, but it takes the 2 biggest names off of the trade market
Boston would get Joey Gathwright and the D-Rays would get Andy Marte. So in essence, Boston is trading Marte(top 5 prospect in all of baseball) for Gathwright(backup CF). I like it. This trade will never go down, its way too complicated and too many contracts involved.
Max...i THINK that the report originated in either the NY Post or Daily News...and ESPN News reported it...for some reason I remember them saying that....which is a good thing. I'd rather have a report surface in the NY Post than ESPN.
Wait, so Boston is trading Manny, Clement (all-star), and a top 5 prospect for Tejada and a backup CF? Something has to be wrong here, unless Boston is in some kind of Marlins payroll purge.
just to be clear...i wasn't questioning you saw it there. wasn't calling you a liar or something. was just curious why ESPN would report it it on TV but not mention it at all on the website.
Not that this makes it particularly a good deal, but on most teams Gathright is much more than just a backup CF. He's 24 years old, he's one of the 5 or 10 fastest players in baseball (Baseball America named him "Fastest Player in Baseball" one year), and when playing full time in the minors he regularly hit in the .320-.370 range up through AAA. If the D-Rays didn't have Crawford, Baldelli and Aubrey Huff in front of him he probably would have been pushed to the majors much faster than he was. Two or three places I've seen him compared with Juan Pierre. When he reached AAA Durham, the Rays started discussing a long-term contract with him, before he'd even played a single game in the majors. That should tell you what at least they think of him. Yes, he doesn't have the potential of Andy Marte, but he's already good enough to be a starter on 2/3 of the teams in baseball, and Andy Marte had a decidedly down statistical year at AAA Richmond and in his brief stint in the majors this year.
i hear ya...i knew where u were coming from...i actually looked for it myself on espn as well...and i was definitely glad i didnt find anything
