My sister is a sophmore at A&M. She and all her friends hate the school, and they basically only go there because they just missed out on UT. If UH goes to Tier 1, you're going to see a lot of similar kids elect to stay home in Houston instead of putting up with the hell-hole that is college station.
They didn't put it in a ****ty part of town, the part of town it's in just got really ****ty over the years. Have you ever driven around there? There are some huge houses there. That's the neighborhood where Howard Hughes was born. We should really look at this through our Houstonian eyes and not with our Horn/Ag blinders. We shouldn't be scoffing at the idea of improving UofH, but hoping for and helping it to happen because having 2 Tier 1 schools in the city only benefits Houston. Its not going to happen overnight, I don't think anybody truly believes that. But that doesn't mean the wheels shouldn't get rolling. Housing is definitely going to be an important aspect to making it happen. Frankly, UofH can kill 2 birds with one stone by buying up some of the worse parts of the surrounding neighborhood and constructing dorms there.
I'm guessing you never went out of town for school? If you are an 18-22 year old kid, what else better do you have to do than go to school? Work at a crappy job? You can get the same crappy job in your college town. Have a social life? I have never had more free time for social activities and had that time filled with awesome choices of things to do than when I was at college.
Why do people assume school location has anything to do with attaining Tier One status? It doesn't. You could drop an aspiring tier one school in the middle of a landfill and it wouldn't make a bit of difference.
I'm no huge fan of either school, I just think it's amusing and mortally terrifiyng at the same time that UH is now in the hood. I'm heading over there myself in another semester from cy-fair/hcc right now. I just won't be foolish enough to take any classes at night, that's all. My dad went to UH back in what would have been the mid 60's and I always wondered why he went there and came out perfectly fine and with a successful job working for shell, but then I'd turn around and see UH dogged at my junior high and throughout high school. I have now solved the great mystery of when UH was not in the hood. Thank you clutchfans .
Have things gotten worse there in the last 10 years or something? Because I went there briefly in the late 90s as a freshman. I lived on campus and went out at night and never felt I was in any danger. And I never saw anything that made me feel like I should be. I always walked all the way across campus after football and basketball games. Walking through campus late at night at UH never felt any different to me than walking through the campus of Texas State late at night. I've gone back periodically to attend concerts at the Moores Opera House and to my eyes it doesn't look like anything has really changed. I think the whole ghetto thing gets blown out of proportion and often times is perpetuated by people who've never even stepped foot on the campus.
Would it change your mind to know that, of UT/ATM/TTU/UH, UH has the lowest on-campus crime rate, per capita, of all 4?
lol yeah, maybe you should've gone to a community college then tried to get into A&M after you were rejected and ended up going to the great institution of Baylor.. getting accepted to our school is a breather, but GRADUATING from it is a different story.. seriously, the hate for A&M is farking idiotic and it gets really annoying.. I mean, I hate the hardcore aggies who go around talkin $h!t about other schools, but this small percentage of aggies doesn't even come close to the enormous number of jealous people who look for every chance to take a cheap shot at our school, which, by the way, is a Tier-I school and is consistently ranked amongst the top in the nation (ranking ahead of UT in several departments) .. you say college station is a "hell-hole", why exactly? it's a freaking college town, ya know, a town that formed around a university, a great university.. academics are excellent, atmosphere is awesome, tradition is amazing, and there are a couple of fun hangout places that don't really get old, I mean, it is no Houston or Austin, but it's not a $h!thole either.. so quit the silly childish antics and act like grown men.. and for the guy with the below-average sister, I hope her and her little friends are able to pull a 2.8 GPA in their music major so they can leave this "hellhole" and go to Austin, where they will proceed to get drunk every night and indulge in activities they shouldn't be indulging in..and I'll leave it there..
Lawl. You posted the same thing twice, once at 4:47 and again at 9:45. Only thing you're forgetting is the shoutout to your 4th period peeps.
It may not be everyones dream school, but it is a good school for a very good price. Would someone rather go to rice or UT, when tuition is a lot cheaper and your salary will probably be as good if not better if you do engineering or business at UT. I am not saying UT is a super school, but if you aren't top 10%, then your chances of getting in aren't good. If UH wanted to be top tier then they would have to be more selective and then people will b**** and moan like how they b**** and moan about UT.
Good for you! Nice post. I think this "hood" business is being blown all out of proportion. UH does a good job of policing the campus and it's not like "the hood" is across the street. Anyone who goes there is perfectly safe. I'd take some care at night walking back to a car across a parking lot, but I would do that on any major campus in a big city. It's just common sense.
I don't like Rice. I don't like the idea of a select few students there. Where is the competition? Where is the teamwork? Where is the dissension in philosophy and ideas? It just turns me off. I would take UT/TAMU over Rice any day. Have out of state people even heard of Rice? Surely they have heard of UT.
this is absurd.. you ever heard of "the Ivy of the south"? Rice is a top 10 institution in the country, and Rice graduates are on a whole higher level in terms of appeal to employers and grad/med schools.. in fact, I can't remember the statistic, but I think over half of the Rice students are out of state admissions.. not to take away from us TAMU and UT students, but you gotta give Rice its dues..
Well, there is the big ole Calhoun lofts development set to open up to Grad and professional students this fall! (not to mention an additional parking garage and new Business lecture hall) http://www.housing.uh.edu/calhounlofts/index.html I understand the pessimism and the overall discontent. It really does seem like UH was sleeping for the past few decades and ignored where it was heading. However, the new president seems pretty intent on spearheading this shift. In about 5 years, the changes will be undeniable.
I do. I understand where you are coming from. Thats not the point I am trying to make. I just don't see how such a tiny population paying inflated tuition can be considered on that level. I guess I would have to experience it on my own. I have a family member who is a masters level professor at Northwestern. That I understand. But Rice? Just not feeling it.
