I've posted this thought elsewhere, but I don't think it's just a matter of shooters suddenly running hot. Rather, the shots are going in because the ball movement's very good, which means shooters are getting the ball in rhythm and before the defender has time to close in. (I'll leave out the question of the quality of the opposing team's defense.)

Also, having Lowry push the ball in transition after the defensive rebound has been important because it puts the defense on its heels and sets up better shots for his teammates. As Lowry gets healthier, we're seeing more of that.

Everyone says this about the Adelman system, but it really is all about good ball movement and passing to the open man, be it a perimeter shot or in the paint.

In the Ws the backcourt (which I label as lowry, lee, martin and smith except in minnesota where lowry didnt play)

    shot and scored:

    Minnesota: 14-33 42.4%fg for 35pts
rest of the team 24-53 45.2% for 85 pts

    Indiana: 15-32 46.8%fg 42pts
rest of team 24/46 52.2% fg for 60 pts

    Knicks: 15-35 42.9% for 50 points
rest of the team 21-45 46.7% for 54 points

    GS: 11-25 44% for 49 points
rest of the team 20/39 51.3% for 62 points

    OKC: 14-34 41.2% for 37 pts
rest of team: 24/50 48% for 62 pts

    LAL: 13-30 43.4% 42 points
rest of team 27/49 55.1% for 67 points

    Mem: 25-37 67.6% for 72 points
    rest of team: 19/37 51.4 for 55

So if anything the memphis game is the exception rather than the norm that when the backcourt scores the ball the Rockets win. In the 6 other victories the front court produced and shot the ball better than the back court did.

seriously your over the top AB love is just way too transparent

    LOL

That was like the definition of inside-out offense.

I consider our SF's part of the backcourt or perimeter players......you need to include them in any analysis.

The 3ball in particular is what I am talking about and how it opens up everything.

Yeah, I am not making the point very clear.....basically I think you need to hit the 3ball whether it comes on the transition in early offense, whether it comes from a post entry pass back out, or whether it comes on the break in a pull up fashion from a pass out.

The perimeter is the key for this team....they have to hit their outside shots.....that is their identity.

When the shots are falling it opens everyting else up, inside, outside, midrange, everything.

I think all year they have been getting GOOD shots, they have just been missing them.......

Finally they seemed to have settled in with a rotation and gained some confidence and boom the shots started falling.

Notice how Scola's offense has been dropping.......we are less relient on his game....

One more thing, this has NOTHING to do with Aaron Brooks vs Kyle Lowry, it has to do with the team hitting 3pters and jumpers.....

A team can not be a contender if they are reliant upon jump shots to win the game. the teams that win championships are the teams that can find ways to win even when the shots aren't falling.

Umm, maybe read-and-react offense is neither inside-out or outside-in. Think Adelman's Sac Kings... would you classify them as inside-out or outside-in? I'd say neither... more of a fluid balanced offense, with bigs sometimes operating on the low post, sometimes on the high post.

You have to do both I concur....

BTW - Brad Miller needs more 3pt shots...how fricken refreshing is it to have a big that can hit the long ball....been wanting one of those since Horry left.

52% from 3pt range for Miller.....good lord that is amazing.

When Yao gets back, he and Miller need time on the floor together.......

Fisher is not a scoring first point guard. He's averaging 7.6 points a game this season and 8.9 per game for his career... He is someone who gets the offense set up and hits his open shots. By no means is he the primary option nor is he out there looking to create his own shot. He hits the open shot when the opportunity presents its self. Looks like I said such in my post saying that PG should be able to not force the shooting issue but take the shot when open.

The Triangle offense is known as the Triple Post offense. It starts with the ball going inside to the post and then cutting, picking off the ball. Kobe scores from there, Gasol gets a fair number of his shots from there.

Rondo does a good job hitting the shots he knows he can make. He isn't known as a scoring PG either. He is averaging 11.4 points per game this season and 10.7 for his career. He gets the ball in other guys' hands first. No one around the league considers him a shooting point guard. He fits his game into the offense.

Absolutely, Brad actually plays more like a power forward anyway, he's just too slow in his old age so they put him at center. The Rockets could do some serious damage in the half court with Miller in the high post and Yao on the block.

The team is still allowing way too many points. We can't count on the guards scoring like this every night, and if they're giving up 100+ points every game, they're going to lose a lot of games. The interior defense needs to be shored up.

considering the title of the thread said "when the guards score the ball" how am I supposed to know that all of a sudden you want to include small forwards?

I think it is more of a result of Scola getting less minutes. He is my favorite player, but he is as big a liability as we have on the defensive end.

The point of this team playing better because they are hitting 3's and jumpshots could be applied to any team. Any team that shoots well from 3 has a better shot at winning. I don't think this is the Rockets winning formula.

Almost all offense is initiated from the perimeter except for the under the basket out of bounds play. After the guards dribble the ball over half court and set up if there is no break.

But, the single biggest common factor of championship teams is their ability to relentlessly get the ball to the rim, either with the dribble drive, or by high post offense passing to cutters, or by low post big men that can get high percentage shots in the lane.

The fundamental principle of basketball is the closer you get to the rim when you shoot the basketball, the more success you will have. The teams that shoot the 3 pointer the most effectively and implement it properly into a championship contender have one or more of these things working for them: 1. A perimeter player that can penetrate against everybody and forces the defense to collapse creating the wide open 3 point looks; 2. or a big time low post player that forces double and triple teams when he catches the ball, thereby creating the wide open 3 point looks or 3. a high post offense that spreads out the floor and looks for the cutters to the rim, forcing the defense to overplay the cuts to create the space for the open 3 point look.

In each case, the only way a perimeter oriented team has success is if there is something going to the rim that creates space. So, you can say it is an outside-in league, but it really doesn't matter, study championship teams. LA, Boston, SA, Houston, they all had one or more of these traits. Even Chicago with Jordan and Pippin, got to the rim primarily and then swung the ball out for the wide open 3 point looks. However, when you look at contrasting teams who make the perimeter the play, such as the Warriors with the three amigos, etc., you will find those teams, while entertaining and winning their fair share of regular season games, they do not win in the playoffs and they do not win championships without the first priority being getting the basketball to the rim and working inside-out.

The three point shot is not worth taking unless it is open and can be taken with feet set and not rushed. That doesn't mean it needs to take all day. But the three point shot is only an efficient part of a championship contending team if it is used in such a manner, by getting the shot off with an open, unrushed look created by the defense having to overplay the interior.

Funny, I was thinking we are finally really playing an inside out game and that will be perfect when Yao returns. I was thinking how Lowry's penetration and collapse of the defense on him is creating alot of open 3's. Now as you bring it up I realize some of our threes are coming without first pentrating. And just the crisp passing and the fact that Martin is such a deadly shot that you can never leave him is creating some 3 opportunities. Also some fastbreak to the lane before the defense can setup is creating open 3 looks. But I wouldn't really surmise we are an outside in team. Unless you want to just state the obvious. ANy team without a big that scores on the inside on some level could be called an Outside in offense. But what I think is really making us effective is our unselfish ball movement and finally executing Adelman's offense more.

I still believe when Yao returns you switch back to Inside out because that is just the smart way to play. Yao commands doubles. Getting the ball to him creates open men behind the arc. The onlt thing that I would change is Yao passing even more quickly out of the doubles. And whoever is on the court do not stop running Adelman's offense. We have a team full of scorers. We just need to move the ball to the open man and let him shoot.

Yao + Brad = slowest front court ever......................

If anything Yao needs to change his role to take more mid-J. We know he has the touch.

    Yao + Hill

    Brad + Hill

Both Better than Yao + Brad.

The number of 3s they hit in the last game was, quite honestly, a fluke. Any team would win shooting like that. It was a rare night and no more indicative of how good the team is than some of those earlier losses were. They're still not getting it done defensively.

When undersized guards named Aaron Brooks scores the ball the Rockets are 0-5. When this doesn't happen, the Rockets are 7-7.
