I agree with this answer. I love the Rockets, but if they ever start a season at 0-20 or something, I'd probably boo.
I think it's an interesting question, actually. Since there's a Rockets reference, and since this is directly related to OP's questions, I'm gonna post entire rule: _____________ Maxim of Manhood #16: Stay Until the End If sports were merely about jumping and sweating and catching balls, we’d be just as entertained watching dogs play fetch. But we demand more. Strategy, pushing the limits, heart, redemption, and every once in a long, long while . . . moments of magic. We crave this magic. The stunning comebacks, like Tracy McGrady’s thirteen points in thirty-three seconds. Eli Manning and the “helmet catch.” The Sox coming back from 0-3. The Bills roaring back from thirty-two points against Warren Moon and the Oilers. And so on. This magic doesn’t come free. The price is loyalty. To truly appreciate these golden moments, you must demonstrate your commitment. When you pay good money to cheer the home team, it is unacceptable to leave early to “beat traffic.” Your team deserves better. You deserve better. The deserters who skulk out of the stadium with six minutes left—bowing their heads in shame, peeling off their jerseys—should be photographed by security, have their tickets confiscated, and get slapped with a lifetime ban from the ballpark. Would you walk out of your daughter’s piano recital the moment she flubs a key? Abandon your buddy if he passed out in the bar? Ditch your girlfriend if she suddenly became annoying? (Scratch that last.) Maxim Exceptions When your team works for you—winning or losing—you root for them. It’s simple. It’s fair. Sometimes, though, the team doesn’t hold up its end of the bargain. If the coach surrenders at an embarrassingly early point in the game—yanking the starters in the third quarter, say—they’ve done little to earn your continued interest Sometimes booing is in order. Sometimes genuine rage, disgust, calling for the coach’s scalp, and yes, if the players have lost interest, quit, and started fondling their iPhones on the sidelines—sometimes leaving early is in order. When NBA cellar dwellers openly tank games in April, you have a right to voice your disappointment. Make no mistake. This extraordinary circumstance is a protest, a last resort, going nuclear, a way of rebuking a child whom you otherwise love. From book: The Maxims of Manhood
I was at the game last night, and after Martin had missed a jumper (this was during the slow start) I could hear quite a few people booing him.
I once booed the opposing team (I think it might've been the Raps IIRC) and people were like throwing wtf-why-are-you-booing faces at me. Then I realized the Rockets had the possession at the time. I almost immediately wanted to buy Southwest tickets. I think the Raps had just scored or something and I had one of those super delayed reaction moments. One other thing, I once sat at the section under the nose bleeds and I was cheering and booing during the game and other spectators (I call them spectators because they surely didn't act like fans) kept on looking at me. Like one of those "look backs" at the movies if you were talking. I was the ONLY person cheering and making some noise (no profanity nor anything offensive whatsoever) and people seemed offended. I hadn't realize some people purchase Rockets tickets to go see an opera.
I think the main issue here is the rockets got off to a good start the first month and a half of the season. Beat portland and lakers early on. When that happened, most people's expectations went from "We might be able to make the 8th seed in the playoffs" to "We should be a top 6 team in the west once T-Mac comes back healthy." So now that the team has leveled off, other teams have started to peak, and T-Mac is gone, a lot of people feel the team is underachieving. They want to bad mouth all the players, the coach, and the GM. Saying everybody is quitting and tanking the season, that Martin is garbage, and Adelman is not doing his job. Upset that we are falling out of the playoff race. They fail to acknowledge the fact that we are missing Ariza and Lowry from the rotation. We are trying to incorporate new players into the system and we are playing some of the better teams in the league that are starting to hit their strides. We are still the same team from early October that has a bunch of role players. Yeah Martin will be good for us, but he was not brought in to do the heavy lifting all by himself (this year). He is a complimentary piece to the big puzzle that includes Yao and possbily another PF/C. For some reason that has been lost this year. The reasonable expectations of we will be a competitive team that has a chance to make the playoffs this year have been forgotten and replaced with it's a failed season if we don't make the playoffs.
I can't find management to boo them! Morey spent the first two months of this season sitting five rows behind me with his wife and kid, but now he's mysteriously gone. Besides, there's NO WAY I'm booing Morey. He's done a stellar job with so little. And he's looking beyond just this game or this month or this season. He's the best thing we have going. Adelman, on the other hand, is right there in front of me at the games. I won't boo him, either, because he's doing well with the hand he was dealt. I do, however, sometimes yell suggestions at Adelman, like "Put in Dikembe!" late in the 4th quarter in 2009 when we were crushing the Cavs by 20. He didn't listen. Dikembe rode pine throughout the blowout. Guess he was saving him for the playoffs. This year I gently suggested that he "Put in Cook!" when we were up double-digits in the final minute of a game or two, but he ignored it. Thank God Adelman doesn't listen to fans like me, or we would've had Gilbert Arenas a couple years ago.
Dude, after a loss, they are 0-1 in their last 1 game. That's on 0-82 pace. That is definitely booable!
this is why the lakers fans are always noted as FAKER FANS, they are only there because of the tradition of the Lakers, or just because they are in LA. THE HOUSTON ROCKETS NEVER GIVE UP, NEITHER SHOULD THEIR FANS.
I don't think I've ever booed the Rockets, but God knows I've screamed at them plenty of times. Scola's desperate flop on the offensive end last night disgusted me enough that I might have booed, had I been there.
And there we have it... the first true knee-jerk reaction! It was only a matter of time. One loss does not a season make, it's true, but the accumulation of 15 losses in a few weeks does equal evidence. Those Clipper fans are just a bunch of knee-jerkers. Missing the playoffs for four straight years is nothing. They should hang in there. "We'll be fine." Over/under for wins on the season for this Rockets team? Gotta go with 39.5. Taking your bets now.
I think it is pretty lame to boo your "team"? I mean I can appreciate a fan getting upset and mad and talking s*it about a player or coaching move , but to outright start booing in the arena, I think it is dumb. Then if the team makes a comeback or steals the win, cheer for them again?
Plenty of fans boo their own teams. I've heard people boo at Laker games. But very few times that is. I think it's reserved for times when your team didn't put forth a real effort.
