The team was probably just trying to practice. Get in some real game time practice. Can't get too upset about it. If you were on the other side, you'd have probably cheered for your team.
Well, if it's pretty obvious that you're demolishing the other team, there will be ample time to practice onside kicks in the 3rd and 4th quarters. Kicking onside in the 1st quarter when you are dominating the game in every aspect is a dick move, no matter how you look at it. On the other hand, anyone from Houston can tell you that no lead is safe.
FREAKIN' UNITED STATES SOCCER TEAM!!!! WHY MUST THEY SCORE 2 GOALS on MExICO in COLUMBUS OHIO when clearly ONE GOAL wins it for them?!?!?!? WHY MUST THEY PILE IT ON!?!?!?!
Everyone knows MEXICO is no match for U.S. in the U.S. THAT U.S. coach is going to get a BEAT DOWN when I see him... piling it on... when is ENOUGH ENOUGH?
Here here! GO HIGHLANDERS! Wait...am I allowed to still root for the Highlanders since I actually went to McCullough HS and not The Woodlands HS?
This is a HS football game, 99% of these guys will stop playing football after HS. You are trying to teach a lesson and beating a team 69-0 doesn't teach good sportsmanship.
Rather than some threats towards the freshman coach or rants on a BBS, have you bothered contacting the Woodlands athletic department and expressing your displeasure? You know, the folks who might actually be able to provide real information? Not too hard to find email information on the Woodlands high school web site.
I don't mind the final score as much as the onside kick while up 22-0 in the 1st quarter? Are you kidding me?? That's bush league at ANY level IMO. OP, did the coach look anything like this? Spoiler
When I was young I used to play a LOT of tennis, and I took it pretty seriously. I've had my fair share of 6-0, 6-0 victories, and also copped a few. Interestingly enough, the only time I've ever felt humiliated wasn't even a double bagel loss. I was losing to this kid 6-0, 3-0 when he decided to take all the pace off his first serve...so essentially serving only second serves. I think he was trying to give me a chance and I did eventually win one game. BUT DAMN it was humiliating. I'd rather take total defeat like a man than being offered sympathy points/games, even at that age. In other sports, my year 8 Aussie Rules Footy team played against some of the top colleges in the state and was smashed by scores of like....160-1, 140-0...etc. We didn't really care. And I was in a basketball team where we won 60-0, then shook our opponent's hands. No-one was upset. Do kids seriously get humiliated by large defeats? It seems to me that it's the parent's who get upset. It was never a problem when I was young, either winning or losing by large margins.
Agreed. And going for two points was pretty bush too. Unless there's some ranking at play where margin of victory means something, this coach was an ass. (almost as much of an ass as the raging uncle on the sidelines ). You never tell your players to take it easy on another team. But once you're up by a bit of a margin, you put in the second/third/forth string. And you give the ball to your less skilled players to let them develop too.
My wife's little brother plays on the Woodlands Freshman A team, according to him, it was not an onside kick, it was just miss-hit by the kicker and nailed one of the OakRidge front line return men (Typically Linemen) in the back and came rolling back to the Woodlands. Similar to the UH/OKST play only in the college game it was intentional... By the way, I dont agree with the OP, you play to win, and as a coach in lower level HS Football the better your team preforms, the sooner you become a Varsity Head Coach/Assistance and make that extra $$$
Did they at least institute a running clock for the second half? Thats what many High Schools do when they are overpowering their opponents like that. I know North Shore does this a lot when they are up by a large margin so they don't run up the score too much and it ends the game quicker. I agree, the onsides kick was over the top, and the coach should've had more class.
Oh, great. Now this thread is going to end up like the Balloon Boy thread with everyone saying "I predicted that it wasn't an onside kick on page 2 of the thread!!!!"
What did Sam do? (no I honestly have no idea what this references.. remember I was a wee bairn when we went to the super bowl... so all I remember was winning lots of games, the Icky Shuffle and Tim Krumrie's leg injury) I am assuming it had something to do with Houston?
He ran up the score on Jerry Glanville's Oilers. 61-7. There were several onside kicks when the game was no longer in doubt. Wyche admitted he did it because he hated Jerry Glanville.
