My opinion of Morey is contingent on this offseason. He has more and better assets now than at any time since the loss of Yao. If he can't change the franchise this offseason and we go into the year with this team (or anything close to it) as it stands now, I'm done. We need to either dump the veterans and get some high level young talent back for them or we need to finally land that impact player he's been going on about for years. It's time to pick a direction. Get 'er done or rebuild. No more treading water--you're not going to get better assets than you have now. Overpay if you have to. Just do something.
Hard to pinpoint, probably two seasons ago when the "revolving door" of player transactions became apparent. Players were shuffling in and out at a steady clip. Maybe it was the T-Will deal where a first round pick was given up for a player that never played. Maybe it was whenever the team started seeming like a treadmill, lots of activity but going nowhere. At some point, someone has to be accountable for the lack of progress.
Let's just bottom line it. The Rockets are a mess. It seems with each passing year that the roster becomes more bizarre, and this is because it is a roster of assets, not players, not a team, but assets, no identity, assets. The 22 game win streak nothing more than a faded memory.
I don't exactly doubt the guy. I mean he had Pau and Nene last year... but now both those contracts would be complained about on Clutch. My opinion towards him was jaded when he hired "mr. Groomed Coach" Mchale. I still think that his process, and ideas are applicable to making a competitive team. The only other thing that was HUGE to this franchise was trusting in YAO, and Mcgrady for as long as they did. People need to get off DM's aszz...it's like Tiger Woods "sorry he can't win every major"-do you know how HARD it is to get a superstar....oh wait ya we traded him for Battier in "win now" mode-maybe it was THAT trade!
During his all-out pursuit of Marcin Gortat and Trevor Ariza following their hot stretch and quick rise to name recognition over a few-week period in 2009. A little too hasty, amateurish, and (forgive me for using a Skip Bayless favorite) "prisoner-of-the-moment"-ish for my liking. Seemed like a fantasy football geek rushing to the waiver wire to be the first to get on his hands on a player who just had a fluke of a breakout game, rather than a rational real-life NBA GM.
Lack of knowledge was prematurely running Adelman off. The ignorance was hiring Mchale to replace him. Stupidity was acquiring 7 undersized power fowards at once. The Rockets will never be a contender under Morey or using moneyball
Not including David Stern's Obvious hate for the rockets, I honestly believe the Rockets and the city of Houston have a bad reputation amongst players and GM's. I think DM and Les are the reason players don't wanna come here because. Morey treats players like objects " assets, value, bargain " . It's not entirely DM's fault because the owner has gotten cheap thinking that the MIT genius could build a championship team with a calculator but is failing due to a lack of basketball instincts and interaction with players, coaches and even fans.
I love this argument. Same question to you that the DD's and leebigez of the universe aren't really able to answer without looking dumb - instead of moneyball, what kind of "ball" should they use then? Instead of maximizing their ROI and getting the most for the least, they should overpay massively and try to get as little as possible from the available resources? Instead of trading up or down, reach to draft overvalued inefficient players and hand them guaranteed rookie deals? Stop being a perenially active team in trade talks every deadline? Use PPG and vertical as their sole metric for scouting? Hire an ex-jock as GM like Michael Jordan or Isiah Thomas who can make judgments based on "feel" or intuition? (idiots are going to grab onto this one like a moth to a flame, I can already sense dadakota blubberign through the dd-verse into our reality on this one...) <CRICKETS....>
i am beyond amazed at how people still believe that Morey can get the job done.. i want my team to win and be great but how many more excuses can people make for him? drafting was been weird to say the least, he can't move any of our big 3 contracts and we make excuses and say "well he's trying at least".. then danny ferry moves the worst contract in nba history last night and people still continue to make excuses.. face it morey lovers, he has a system called Moreyball, and it's all about gathering assets for the cheap and trying to flip them for something great… well it doesn't work.. If morey is so amazing, i want 1 rockets fan to tell me what direction this team is going? he seems confused on the direction and has no back up plan.. our plan was to get a star, well that won't happen, so what we gonna do now with a disaster of a roster?
I never thought the day would come where I said this, but I support Sam Fisher 100%. Moreyball can build a bridge...
I don't think Morey has been bad, I just don't think he has been particularly good. His moves have kept the team right in the middle, while many seem incrementally better they are offset by the uneasy chemistry around the organization where people don't really feel they are part of anything and are about to be traded. At some point you have to put a stake in the ground and build. DD
Joe Johnson got moved for garbage. What are the big "3" contracts you are talking about that Morey "can't" move? I'm assuming one is Martin. Why would you trade Martin (expiring) for a bunch of expiring contract scrubs? The other is likely Scola. Are you advocating dumping Scola for scrubs?
True story. The real problem is with players like LerBon, Wade, Bosh, Howard, Kobe, DWill, Paul... and their lack of interest in coming to Houston.
So you fault Morey for pursuing a coveted center who we wish were on the roster today. And you fault Morey for signing Ariza, recognizing his deficiencies as a player, and then trading him for Courtney Lee a year later. So Morey has shown the ability to recognize talent, and when that talent doesn't pan out, to cut his losses and get >= value. And this is why you're critical of him?
