... that you wanted to marry your spouse?

I was watching this Stephen Colbert video where he shares a heartfelt moment of how he was in love with a woman, debating whether to marry her, and then he met a woman who became his wife.

    So how did you know?

Didn't you just get married to your friend?

I didn't know. But she knows apparently. Will tie the knot soon.

Nope, not yet! We've been dating for two years this Friday.

Recently was told just like Colbert, it's fish or cut bait.

If you have to ask the question, you may not ever know with her.

I knew within 30 days of meeting my wife. There are no questions when it's the right one. It's a combination meeting the right woman and being far enough in your maturity to recognize that it's not going to get any better than this. It was easy for me because my wife is quite a bit out of my league.

There was no sudden moment of realization.

We had been together for 5-6 years and it was something I had thought about over time because it's just a natural thing to think about. I think I had a few reasons.

    • Never had a heated argument (and still haven't)
    • I fully trusted her and she fully trusted me
    • I got along great with her
    • No new problems after we had moved in together
    • Some overlapping beliefs and interests
    • Her family was always good to me
    • Already bought a house in both of our names
    • I knew that I wanted kids and that she would be a terrific mother
    • She was A-OK with working (ain't 'bout to support no at-home wife/mom)
    • I knew that she would want to stay as her own person and self, and not just be Mrs Haymitch
    • She was with me when I was broke and never once complained or made me feel bad about it
    • Once I did get a good paying job, she didn't change a bit

After those years and with all of the above (and more), it was more like me asking myself, "What the hell am I waiting on?" I sure a s*** did not want to go out into the dating world again.

Don't remember, but I knew exactly when I wanted out and made it happen quickly.

    After our first date.

It's a cliche, but sometimes you just know.

It didn't hurt that she had a pitcher of beer and 2 glasses waiting at the table when I got there. Talk about a great first impression.

Things really just fell into place for us. We've been together for 5 years now, married for 2, and I can honestly count the number of arguments we've had on one hand. Our first date was supposed to just be an early dinner, as both of us had already made plans to meet up with friends afterwards. Instead, we killed about 3 bottles of wine, stayed at the restaurant until closing time, and ended up going to another place for coffee and dessert. I can't say for certain if that was the moment I knew we were going to spend the rest of our lives together, but I can say with certainty that on the drive home, I definitely thought about how I could see myself falling in love with her.

Very interesting breh. I don't think I'll ever be sure which one is the one until I marry one and find out for myself.

I knew she was the one on at least 4 of my exes. I guess I'll know in a few years after I tie the knot with my current one in a few weeks.

If it's right, it won't matter if you get married.

The criteria for getting married is very different from the criteria for wanting to stay together without ever trying.

There's nothing wrong with divorce and there's nothing wrong with being alone. In fact, if you can't be alone, then you better stay alone till you can and then you're ready to be with someone. We both believe these things and don't take them for granted.
