I don't think you understand how much the U.S. has to lose if sovereignty is no longer protected. The U.S. could be sued in foreign courts for everything from Iraq to Hiroshima and would likely lose and face incredible costs and a diplomatic nightmare.

Sovereignty protects the U.S. more than any nation in the world. France is already amending its own laws to be able to sue the U.S. n their courts, other countries will follow suit.

Also how will this work even - U.S. courts are not equipped to handle these cases - they aren't going to get cooperation from the Saudis in any trial so it literally will be a kangaroo court.

Saying that the victims and families of 9/11 should not sue Salafi Arabia is like saying that people should not protest or sue police when they believe the police have acted against them with malicious intent (i.e. police brutality). It is just a dumb argument all around and I am surprised that a president with a law degree, and teaching experience, is getting hung-up on such a childish slippery-slope argument.

Even if US were sued the only way you could collect would be if US had assets in an overseas entity. I think the bigger concern is Saudi will just pull their money from US banks. They probably have trillions in assets. Even if the victims win they wouldn't be able to collect. It's not like a US ruling is valid in Saudi Arabia.

If the US Economy tanks..the world markets would crash...And the world would enter a major depression. It would take a major scientific innovation or another world war to jump start our nation again. The Chinese own us...and now the Saudi's do as well?? The US has become an international b#$% and some on this board are ready to vote for another sellout.

Our nation has been sold out and our interests are NO longer the best interests for our leaders.

congress wanted in the 70s to sue Saudis for Oil embargo
congress wanted in the 80s to sue Saudis for supporting yasser Arafat and PO
congress wanted in the 90s to sue Saudis for prosecuting Jihadists and stripping citizenship of bin laden among others under the title of human right violation
congress wants now to sue the Saudis for 9/11 involvement based on pipedreams of (the 28 classified pages )
http://www.cnn.com/2016/07/15/politics/28-pages-released-full-text/ , which Bush/Obama kept it secret for a decade and half but politcaly gave what it seems a false impression

regardless of the indictment , it is an election time, showcase of who is more pro-israel between Dem/Rep. does matter. the US can confiscated Saudi's assets if they wanted to, the Saudi can withdraw from The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons or use different currency to sell oil etc , China/EU are pegged to this as well , it will be thrilling at least and highly intoxicating

It's weird that he'd face a potential override of a veto one of the few times Obama is right about something.

I'm so do for this. If our soldier kill innocent people overseas they should be jailed overseas and we should wash our hands of them.

I'm happy this veto got overturned though like someone mentioned, money talks and if the Saudis refuse to do business here because of it then these lawsuits won't amount to anything but kangaroo courts.

The NYT has an article on this. The way it went down seems like a complete miscalculation by all parties.

So incredibly stupid. Even though it wasn't a national referendum, it feels like like our very own brexit

Sorry, I have to ask... are you two serious or being sarcastic? You're having a discussion about whether the US gov has ever done anything as bad as 9/11 vs "well we've done some shady things"?

Btw chill the F out guys. Nothing is going to change, none of what Obama or Brennan are shrieking about is ever going to happen, and if it does happen it won't be enforced anywhere.

No one is going to lose anything. Sadly, no justice is going to be served for any victims families. Even more sadly, money and court decisions don't bring back loved ones. Saudi and American leaders are going to continue to be close friends, thanks largely to the two HUGE MASSIVE gestures Obama has made to the Saudi government (veto and improved arms sales). The money will stay in the bank, except the chunk of it which was going to come out soon anyway because Saudi is currently bleeding cash.

Hillary will make it even better than before.
