Looks like someone needs a visit from Phil McCracken, Scottish therapist.... I picked American food but Mexican food is a close 2nd for me.
the attack of the indians... Depends what type, northern or southern. Southern is usually veg, and Northern is non veg if im not mistaken? I like dishes like chicken tikka, kabab, biryani... idli's dosa's and stuff like that got me bored after a while
What's American food exactly? Are we talking burgers and fast food? I love Indian food. Especially the quick stuff you get, the ones they give you on the spot - pani puri, dai puri, beil puri... all that stuff, love it.
Your choice of foods were pretty lacking. I am in culinary school training to become a chef. I am a total fan of Italian food. To the poster saying Italiano has no variety. HAAAA!! There are numerous different regions of Italy each having there own unique blend of flavors usually based around the local wine and cheese selection. Personally it doesn't get much better than my "SPECIAL" Zucchini flower pasta salad. I usually prefer to use homeade pastas but if this choice isn't available use something larger(ex:linguini) 1. You want to make the batter for the Zucchini flowers that consists of water, flour, kosher salt, cracked black pepper. You want to engulf the entire flower into the batter making sure it has an even consistency(get your hands dirty!) You want to fry those until crisp and golden. Make however many flowers you want. You could have them for an appertif if need be. It seems simple because it is. The flower is so delicate and you dont warm to harm its natural taste through some heavy batter. 2. You want to make the base your pasta which will be my own special pesto sauce. You take a good amount of eveo(extra virgin olive oil) the greener the better.. greener means it has a fruity quality. put it into a hot pan then adding a handful of chopped pinenuts and freshly cut basil and my special ingredient "chopped mary jane" a handful will do you nicely Stir till it comes to a nice consistency before herbs burn. 3. Boil your pasta until al dente or still has a small bite to it serve into large serving dish( i find family style dining is always the most fun) 4. Add "mary jane pesto sauce" over top of the pasta then adding a fresh grading of pecarino romano cheese. Lastly add the Zucchini flowers for something simple something you will remember for at least the rest of the night (Of course the maryjane can be substitued for some other fresh herb but i usually like to use what is at hand) Then take your glass of Ecco Domani Red and have yourselves a feast. ENJOY
1. Indian (I consider it my home food even though I am not Indian...long story) 2. Vietnamese 3. Japanese 4. Cajun 5. Thai 6. Ethiopian (would be higher if not for availability) rimrocker, How about Houston?
You got that right babe. I've lived in several places other than Texas and you cannot get good Mexican food anywhere. It was funny, the other day my wife and I were at a local pizza shop (in the Charlotte suburbs) and over heard the girl at the counter and a guy talking about being from Texas. So I go up and start talking with them about the glorious state from which I originate. The main topic of discussion was the lack of mexican food. My mom flew out here for Memorial Day and she brought us a ton of Pappasitos. I felt like I had died and gone to heaven. Enchiladas, beans, rice, salsa. We still have half of it in the freezer and I think about it everyday. I may have a problem. Are there any 12 step programs for mexican food?
My favorite food in the whole world is fried chicken. In fact, my favorite meal in the whole world (this is going to sound like some weird German/Soul food combo, but its really the kind of food my dad ate back in the 20's when his parents were sharecroppers) is: Fried chicken Dark brown gravy sour kraut mustard greens black eyed peas w/snaps white rice and of course, all the veggies other than the rice are seasoned with some bacon. As far as favorite foods go, I'd have to put them in this order: Thai Chinese Vietnamese and Japanese probably tie for third Mexican .......... OK......I just realized how impossible it is to come up with this list. There are just too many different regional varieties to each nationality.....and I love so many dishes from so many different ones. Think of all the different regional fares in America alone: lobster rolls and clam chowder from the Northeast. Bagels and lox from NY, Maryland crabs, all the different regional forms of BBQ, grilled steaks, Country/Soul food, Cajun/Creole, Tex-Mex, Southwest, California, Pacific Northwest. There's so many great foods in America.....as well as the rest of the world. this is just too hard for me to finish my list.
I think we need a separate thread that asks what people's favorite dishes are. That way we don't have to generalize and say "I Like Japanese, but not seafood."
I'm a vegetarian... but I've NEVER loved the South Indian veg snackie type foods. I'm only down for the "chappatis" and various vegetarian "badgies" (spinach, cauliflower, "chole", eggplant, mushroom, etc.) I tried an idlii and dosa and that stuff once in my life and I HATED IT!!!!
You're talking about tex-mex like taco cabana and taco hell and such. Real mexican food is so much different than tex-mex. You can actually make Mexican dishes that don't have tortillas or beans or cheese for that matter. Master, I've always wanted to live in NC, and especially around Charlotte for many reasons (not just NASCAR) but the one thing that scares the crap out of me is seriously the lack of real mexican food. I don't think there's a 12 step program. I think you're screwed - and I'm screwed if I ever leave!
North Indian or Punjabi food Rules. I can't stand South Indian food. Oh yea, Arabic food rules. Fadis is a great place!
I would love a dosa or some good samosas right now... not that I'm Indian, or even know much about them, but they're good. The frozen food kind aren't the same. When I was at UT, there was a "Sarovar" thing in Dobie Mall that served a bowl of... chat samosas, I think it was? Best large snack ever.
I know not having Mexican food really sucks, but it may be worth it to live here. Charlotte freaking rules. Downtown is awesome. The city is very young which is nice when you are young like we are. On Thursdays after work there is a thing called Live At Five. They have live bands, beer, and food. Lots of people hang out for several hours and then hit the bars. When Friends had the series finale they showed it on the side of the Wachovia Bank building so everyone could watch. There is a pretty decent variety of restaurants and this is coming from a guy that b****es about restaurants like few others. The weather is great. You get warm weather but you also get some cold which is nice during the holidays. Traffic is ehh. Nothing like Houston but there is a little. They are working on the roads so that it isnt that bad and unlike Houston there is an end in sight. You are close to the mountains, you are close to the ocean, there are two nice lakes in the area. If you like golf then you are in heaven and of course I know you love NASCAR. There are a ton of other cities that are close by which is cool. It would be great to have another Rockets fan out here. We really like it here and are hoping to stay permanently.
