BMI doesn't work for NFL players because, on average, they are a lot more muscular than the average person. Unless you are very muscular, BMI is a decent way to guage your weight. It is NOT the only way though.

BTW, there are a lot of NFL lineman who are overweight and would do well to lose a lot of weight. Some of them are not healthy, even though they have somehow built up their endurance enough to play in the NFL.

What happens is they continue to consume the same calories but don't continue to burn them with daily intense workouts/practices/games.

    25.1 for me.

Thing is, my friend is the same height and weight, but we are shaped totally differently. He's got a beer belly for a stomach, I've got a lot more muscle than him.

Really, I think there's got to be some other indicator for this stat to make any sense.

I'm afraid that muscle does not, in fact, turn into fat.

BMI is so damn overrated. According to the calculator, Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime was severely overweight at 34 BMI and dangerously unhealthy. Bodyfat % is a much better indicator at a person's health. The BMI indicator assumes your entire body is consumed of fat, and all it measures is your weight relative to your size.

    EDIT: BMI=30.7

    26.4

I'm 6'1" and 200 lbs. But I'm also pretty broad. I have a friend who's a couple of inches taller than me but has a very narrow torso. Even though he's taller than me, looking at our body types it makes sense that I weigh more than he does.

Body Mass Index is utter crap, in my opinion. It fails to take into account muscle, etc. Several professional sports players would be considered obese, including Shaq probably every single lineman in the NFL, some Tight Ends, Linebackers, etc.

Okay, here's a random list of people I looked up that are "obese":

    Ray Lewis
    Tony Gonzalez(borderline)
    LenDale White
    Shaq
    Jerome Bettis
    Tony Eusebio
    Tony Gwynn
    Bill Goldberg
    Stone Cold Steve Austin
    Jeremy Shcokey
    Billy Miller
    Brian Urlacher
    Roy Williams (Dallas Cowboys)
    Daunte Culpepper
    Donovan McNabb
    Kevin Mench
    David Wells
    Sammy Sosa

I could go on and on....

You had to use the BMI to figure out that David Wells was obese?

the only time that i think bmi could be useful is if you already know you're overweight and it's because of a gut not huge muscles. however at that point what does knowing your bmi actually do for you? it's pretty much worthless. knowing your weight and more importantly your body fat % gives you something to work with.
