That's another long story. I quite school after my sophmore year and sat out 5 years before returning and finishing. They met while I was out of school "finding" myself. LOL
About 3/4s of the way through third grade my family moved back to Houston from Nashville. That summer, we took a family trip down to South Padre and we bumped into a kid (and his family) who sat next to me in my third grade class in Nashville in some ice cream shop. That kid was also the grandson of Waylon Jennings.
heh, someone just posted a picture of his ex brother-in-law in this thread. priceless http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=106828
My roommate my sophomore year in college went to basketball camp at Baylor with my best friend and me. We hung out the entire week. My wife met this girl about a month ago and we became fast friends with her and her husband. Turns out we basically floated the Guadalupe with them back in June during my wife's bachelorette party. We even had our cameras mixed up and we had their pictures and they had our's.
I'm from Clear Lake and back in 1992, our family took a cross country road trip to many cities including Buffalo, Toronto, Montreal, New York and DC. While in Montreal, we were walking around Chinatown on a weekday and waited to be seated in a random Chinese restaurant that required taking a few steps down into the "basement." Out comes a family and it's a classmate of mine I ended up being best friends with and I still see her all the time now. She was one of the bridesmaid's at my twin's wedding. Also, we had a family friend that was ~10 years older than me and back in 1994, we were on a train coming down A-li-shan (a mountain for those that know) in Taiwan and she sat in the same train car as us. We hadn't seen her in over 8 years. I haven't seen her since that day either. I moved from Pasadena ISD in 1988 (after 3rd grade) and freshman year at UT, I was walking down Speedway (from the ME building to Jester) when this girl looked really familiar. She was my classmate and really good friend from 3rd grade at Moore Elementary and I recognized her!! I'm still good friends with her now.
I was taking my mom out West in summer 2004; we thought we would show her the spring-fed pool at Balmorhea because it's not far off the road and looks cool. I heard a voice coming from the pool, "Dr. [Isabel]?" It was one of my former students, who had moved out to Fort Davis earlier. At least that solves the mystery of where he went; he sort of dropped out in the middle of the semester and we thought he'd gone out there but weren't entirely sure. It's just weird to run into somebody in such a random, faraway place.
In 1994 I was in Houston. I took my nephews over to Second Baptist Church for basketball, roller skating, bowling etc. I walked up to the counter to get some skates, looked up and said "Larry!" It was my best friend from elementary school whom I had not seen in 30 years. I recognized him instantly.
I was in London, England 7 years ago. I was riding the bus and asked someone for directions. Only after speaking to her did I realize she was an American. We got to talking and it turns out she was from Houston, Clear Lake to be specific, just minutes from where I lived. To make things even weirder, I saw this same girl a week later in a completely different part of London.
Last April I was seeing Lenny Kravitz by myself at the Beacon Theater in New York and ended up sitting next to my next door neighbor from elementary school, this kid Alex I used to hang with. He lives in Houston and was in town for business. This was the second time I have run into a Houston high school person at a random concert somewhere. One time on tour with the Dead in the 1991 I ran into my friend Kendra who was as equally fungified and surprised to see me. We were in a field in Ohio.
We were in Manhattan last June, and my wife and I went out for some Greek food at a place on the Upper West Side. We were staying at Herald Square, so we took the subway. We're walking between some tables on the sidewalk, which were full, to get to the front door, when my wife catches a familiar face out of the corner of her eye. It was my uncle and aunt. My uncle is only 7 years older than I am, being my Dad's half brother, and we hadn't seen each other in 5 years, and only that one time in over 10. The reason was a very bitter family fight over my grandfather's estate, caused by my step-grandmother, with help from my uncle... a Dean at a major Houston university, who's mentor had been his older brother, my father. You might say that my uncle had helped with the knife that stabbed some of us in the back, and cost his own sister money that she badly needed. As you can tell, it hasn't been forgotten. At any rate, they invited us to sit with them, which was rather awkward, to say the least. The line from Casablanca crossed my mind... you know the one where Bogart says, "Of all the gin joints, in all the world, you had to come into mine." In a city of eight million people, we had gone out to a place we hadn't been before, on a whim, and there they were. They asked about our children, and we made small talk. When we were all leaving, I pulled him aside and whispered in his ear that I thought this must be fate, and I thought we should bury the hatchet. He choked up and said he'd wanted to know my kids, loved me, and had missed us. Small world.
A couple of years ago I was playing trivia at a bar in Vegas and I started talking to this guy from Milwaukee. I end up finding out that he was my younger brother's high school teacher. Is it me or does Folgelberg look like Jesus Christ? And if he is the Messiah does this mean I have to buy his Greatest Hits.
A couple months after I started dating my current girlfriend, I was talking to her about all the places I've lived, and she was telling me where she lived. It turns out her dad flew for the Air Force and my dad fixed airplane engines for the Air Force. When we realized this, we started looking at all the places we lived, and we realized that we both lived at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa at the same time. We both lived on the same base for about a year, when I was 2 or 3 and she was about a year old. Come to find out, my dad fixed F16 engines, and her dad flew F16s. At some point or another, my dad must have worked on her dad's air plane. It'd be different if we both still live in Tampa or something, but after Tampa, I moved to Houston, and she moved to places like Utah, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and New York. We finally ended up meeting once I ended up moving to her town in New York.
My great-grandparents both immigrated to the US from Sweden in the early 20th century. While they lived in Sweden they had lived about ten miles from each other but had never met. But they moved to the States and wound up meeting each other in Illinois and falling in love...crazy.
Nothing exciting. My sister has had this friend since way back in high school. This is late 80s early 90s, whatever. At this time, she happened to be my supervisor at work. (She doesnt work there anymore.) She basically handed me the job. But I deserved it, I'm sure I was the best candidate anyway. There is this girl at work that I befriended. We hit it off and all that crap. She would continuously talk mad **** about the supervisor, and stuff. Which I thought was funny, because I know the supervisor pretty well. The supervisors brother is actually friends with her baby's daddy. She already knew that though. But when I told her that I knew of the supervisor long before coming to work, she was like "oh man." That was kinda funny. Another story involving her was last week or a few weeks ago, at the latest clutchfans pickup game. It was being hosted at Macalu's house. His neighbor is actually my friends aunt. The same girl from the story above. I wanted to say what's up to her, but I was kinda chicken. Those were dumb.
This is kind of a long one, so bear with me. When I was in college, I came to Houston (from Australia) to do work experience for 3 months. On the plane on the way, I met three ladies who had just been to Hong Kong to visit their husbands (who were all in the Navy). After chatting with them, they all invited me to come visit them in LA/San Diego on my way back home in three months. So I spend three months in Houston, and rent a room off a guy, who I get to know pretty well. He is originally from a small town called Metz, Missouri. As promised, I return to the west coast on the back to AUstralia to visit these girls, and guess where they grew up - Metz Missouri, and they all knew my room mate well!
All this thread proves is that yall live in some small hick towns. Just kidding. I'm just jealous because I can't think of a similar story.
i lived in iowa until i was 10 or so and my grandmother had a naighbor whom i played with all the time. she 9 at that time (we'll call her jane). everyone thought we were so cute together cuz we held hands and stuff. i moved to california, lived my life without any word from her. during my freshmen year in college, i was in berkeley for some forgotten reason. i needed change for the meter and what better place to get it than in a near by bank. as i walked through the door, someone yells my name. i turn around and see jane's much older sister. i've seen her sister about two years before cuz she dated my uncle for a while. she asked me if i recongnized the hot girl sitting next to her, to which i replied "no". she almost screams "It's Jane"! we chatted about 3 minutes and i walked away thinking "small world". i haven't seen either of them since but i hear jane's married now.
