This is great. I hope the artist pulls this off--in the interview he sounded like he wasn't too sure about his work. Either way, Dream is one of the best in NBA history. What he did to Robinon in that series (and I'm glad someone linked that youtube video, because it may be my favorite of all time) is legendary. Seriously, when has their ever been a one on one matchup between two marquee players at the height of their powers where one player has so thouroughly dominated the other? In any sport? Ever? Maybe the best single series of basketball ever played by an individual.
props to the rockets. this doesn't completely make up for the way they completely disrespected Dream on his way out, but it's a start.
"Rectifying" makes it sound like they've neglected to do it until now, but it took years just to find a design that would be acceptable to Olajuwon and then of the course the time it takes to actually sculpt it.
Well I think its difficult to limit an artist to such strict guidelines - or any guidelines for that matter.
I'm sort of dissapointed that there won't be a statue of his likeness out in front of the TC. But I guess something is better than nothing. I have always felt, that Hakeem was the greatest player ever, just due to how dominant he was at both ends of the floor. Yes, Jordan was great too, and he was a very flashy offensively, but he wasn't an Hakeem. On a related note, does anyone remember the "Hakeem the Dream" song? I think the lyrics were something like this: "With Etonic shoes, he does insides moves as he powers to hoop.. he takes the pass high above the glass for the one hand alley-opp you won't survive your dribble-drive 'cause he'll take it from your hands you think your hot, just take your shot..he'll knock in the stand.. Dream, Dream, Dream, Dream, Dream..Unbelievable...Dream, Dream, Dream, Dream, Dream...Unbeatable..."
That was just a last minute money grap by the Dream. They pretty much got screwed on that deal, but better them than us.
if i was that artist i woulda sculpted up a huge martini glass with david robinson floating inside, and a title header at the bottom reading "shaken, not stirred"
Same here. He kept me tuned in after the Dream Era. Loved every minute of it. I'm a fan of Houston Rockets basketball, win or lose. Hell, we could never make the playoffs ever again and I'd still watch every game.
so awesome, even more so because me and the wife will be there as it's the last regular season game we have tickets to, love how that worked out!
What exactly will it be since it's not going to be a statue of Dream himself? Jersey statue? D-Rob in the air while his shoes were on the ground? The KJ dunk? Just kidding!
This is so awesome! Dream is FINALLY getting his change! I wish I could be there to see the unveiling, but the memories of watching him play will have to be enough. Olajuwon IS the Houston Rockets, and always will be.
