I have no issues with Hader speaking out... I like the competitiveness/firey nature. Although given his age, he's got a few more guys ahead of him that the team will need to figure it out on before they get to him and he needs to understand that. I do have an issue when "big leaguers" (who may not be worthy of their place in MLB) or the big league "manager" (who has his own issues) feel slighted about this whole thing. It really was a non-story, but if any of this is actually weighing on the minds of the current Astros and their manager, they need to re-evaluate/re-calibrate their current self-importance.
They certainly shouldn't feel slighted personally, I agree. But I can imagine a guy, any guy really at the major league level, feeling like they had to earn each and every promotion to get where they are. Promoting a guy who hasn't earned a thing undermines the system. That is, a system that rewards hard work that translates to results on the field. Anyone who feels like they have had people promoted over them who were less competent must know this feeling, and the emotion it evokes.
But you can't simply ignore Appel's 4 year college career, despite his bad year this year. You also can't ignore his overall talent... even if his brain is getting in the way of it. Lastly, while the monetary investment shouldn't dictate what happens by itself... it is a factor. And that monetary investment was a result of Appel dominating and proving himself (albeit at the college level) long before Hader did. And again... its a AA promotion, not a big league one, and part of the reason for the promotion is to get him out of that ballpark and give him a change of scene (not entirely merit based at all). I'd also like to see Cosart's A+ numbers had he been at Lancaster vs. Clearwater.
Yea i'd take that 4 year period and say it It's a lot more than just being historically bad as a major league team though
So while there's arguments over Appel's promotion with his 9.74 in single A to double A, Kris Bryant is batting cleanup and cleaning up bases in AAA. 2012 seemed so promising draft-wise only to seemingly bomb 2013-14.
Losing the top pick hurts obviously, but 2014 hasn't really been a bomb, we've got 3 guys that look really good. Plus we get the comp pick next year.
Yea hopefully they are able to knock it out of the park next year with 2 top 5 picks (hopefully 1 & 2).
My comments were not simply about the w/l record of the major league club. It's more about the past couple of years in general Didn't mean to disrupt the Appel thread, i'll get back to talking about Appel here and the organization in general in other thread.
At this point that's what I'm hoping for. Can you imagine having both Buxton and Correa? Or Appel and Bryant? I was pondering this the other day has any team in any sport had both the # 1 and # 2 pick in the same draft?
Colts in 1992 (link). They drafted Steve Emtman (DE, Washington) and Quentin Coryatt (LB, Texas A&M). That's the first one that popped into mind for me.
