A friend who's fairly intelligent told me to buy Washington Mutual stocks a few years ago, when it was at 5 dollars a share. The reasoning is that large banks don't fail. So I did, and I lost 3 thousand dollars.

What are some not so smart advice that you've followed through? and the results so that others may learn.

    The inverse:

Called my father in law (financial adviser) circa 2008 and asked what to do with my IRA cash from a recent 401k rollover. He told me to hold it in cash because there were indications of some serious **** going down.

    I did not listen.

    And lost ~40%.

 I caught that too. The superlative and comparative words confuse many people and make them write one instead of the other, but I don't know which one of the two is worse. ;)

Some folks here advised that I buy a rifle and shoot back. My lawyer tells me not to comment on it while my case is pending, though. :p

They aren't the ones who are confused. The comparative/superlative distinction simply doesn't exist in some forms of written English.

"You like music...why don't you major in Music instead of Accounting?" Took this advice in 1988.

"Now is the perfect time to buy a house!" Took this advice in 2004.

Once, someone convinced me that I should do everything the opposite of what I usually did. :( I didn't get the job with the Yankees as a result.

In the case of the title of this thread, the distinction exists, and it was not used properly.

I think for 90% of people it's probably "buying a house is a good investment."

I'm different, I ignore most advice.

I can think of some good advice I should have taken. :(
