A Power Forward's job is to rebound, set picks and post-up. A Center's main job is to block shots

Their job consists of playing basketball....

There are certain players that are limited with their skills, and are in there for specific reasons, sure. The likelihood of the bigger guys rebounding more and blocking more shots is true based on size and strength alone, but there are so many more things that players are responsible for at the NBA level than "rebound, post up, set picks, etc."

When I said the 5 must have a low block game I did not mean to imply that his game was limited to such. Similarly I did not mean to imply that a 4 could not have a low block game.

More to the point, could Someone like Cato ever play the 4? He could but it would take its toll on the total offense. Cato's defender would not have to guard him, when Cato was on the perimeter to give space for another teammate to be on the low block. Cato's defender would also be inclined to double team the low block. On the double team, Cato could slash to the basket, but it is a hard pass to make out of the double team that has be perfectly timed. The easier pass to make is to find Cato 10' from the basket, where as far as Cato is concerned might as well be the three point line. Cato facing the basket 10' away and undefended has only two options: pass or dribble once and dunk into the teeth of the defense. Both options suck.

How many teams have a 4 who can not hit a 10' jump shot and who is not considered a major liability? I can come up with examples, but they are all exceptions to the rule. One example would be Rodman with the Bulls, but the Bulls' 5 had an outside game and no low post game to speak of.

I don't really think that there is a difference now.

about 10 years ago there was, centers were 7-footers and played alot of postup, and PF's played a little more faceup.

But now many teams are going with three forwards and no center.

In our case, for a little while we went with 2 forwards and 3 guards.

Mo, Kenny, Walt(listed as a SF, but plays like a SG, Shandon, Steve.
