Not ironic at all. Why don't you try traveling the world for a while and/or broadening your reading. You would quickly discover that, for all "our" faults, and there are plenty of them in regards to how women are treated in this country, we are far, far ahead of most of the rest of the world... areas like the Middle East and Africa. Heck, just about any underdeveloped or developing part of this planet, which is easily the majority of this rolling ball we live on. Because things are so much worse for women there doesn't make instances of inequality, still widespread, acceptable in this country. Not in my opinion.

Even in the same field, with the same experience, women earn less than men.

Take for example, the field of chemical engineering. At 16-20 yrs experience, women will make on average 13 grand less than the equivalent male.

I'm not saying that statistics are not skewable - just that there is plenty of truth the assertion of a gender wage gap.

This study seems to say that it is TRUE and not false.

Dave Attell - A woman walks into a bar w/ a black eye. And I'm thinking to myself... 'now here's a woman who doesn't know how to listen.' His delivery was so perfect , I burst out laughing. I felt bad about it but it was just so unexpected.

Anyways, I chalk up feminists w/ religious groups, political groups, etc. The majority are trying to accomplish something good, but you only end up noticing the extremists who go off on a tangent and do their cause more harm than good.

I really feel sorry for my gf. She does some kind of research (all that stuff is over my head, but currently she's working on something w/ cancer I think). She's considering switching career paths because the reputation is women have a serious glass ceiling. Other people in the field have given her the same advice. It's such a shame.

To OP, I think you need to have a long talk with her and see what's going on with her. That's the best solution.

On the feminist stuff, I agree that there has to be some action for equality for women. Most definitely. It's just a part of life where a person has to work harder than someone else. It's GUARANTEED that EVERY one of us has to work harder than someone else whether we're hispanic, white, black, blind, deaf, woman, man and etc.

We just gotta deal with it and stand up for what we believe in.

PiggyTails, just remember that this board is dominated by males so just don't get too overworked...sometimes, they have a brain fart (or all the times). :)

I've read in some places that the gap exists and in some places that it does not. The big problem is that as you mention, it is really easy to skew statistics (85% of people know that). Because I don't know who's doing the research and what their motivation is, I'm not entirely sure what to believe.

Regardless of whether or not there is a gender pay gap, there is clearly still some sexism in many places of work.

I don't hit women. I would never hit a woman. I'd hit a woman who was trying to hit me with a bottle. That's different. That's self-defense, isn't it? Or a woman who could do karate. I would never hit a woman generally.

I know this thing needed to stay buried. Darnit though I was doing lots of stuff away from the board.

Nice post. If you're standing up for what you perceive is an unrepresented minority that's being miscast, nothing to apologize for really if you're fairly presenting their side. Regardless of the thread topic.

(My true humble opinion, for what its worth)
I think there's definitely still a place for feminism, for women's liberation/equality, whichever term is most acceptable. I AGREE with most everything feminism is about. Its that mostly for guys, its, just...

    CONFUSING. Is all.

You said it yourself, there's different types of feminists. I take it further - There's many different types of WOMEN period.

Why, because there's so many options now for women. So many different routes to take you can't tell who's about what, who's nice, who's a b****. Who's traditionalist, modernist. Who's "independent", who's not. And a lot of women (in my opinion) want it just like that. A lot of women want the "Stop Staring At My Chest!" thing though they're wearing a low slung top with cleave even the valet guy can see from outside.

Not gonna talk on about my agreements & disagreements with feminism, simply -
    1) Everyone stereotypes - MUCH easier to stereotype a guy than a woman
    2) Want more money, tell the boss - you'll never miss a day for any personal or at home event, won't miss up to half a year for having 2 separate kids, wont have wont miss additional time for anything kids related after that, (but actually truly DONT miss days) instead of acting like you're there buying time until your husband gets a raise at his job, and you'll get comparitive male money.
    3) Cant talk about a woman's experience if you're not one. But here's a secret guys from the past several centuries can say about their experience -

Work Sucks. Glad you could join.

The point of the thread finally... :p

    My hopefully not overstated opinion,
Its just all about power, security, influence. Then love comes somewhere in that... Even for the ones in the daintiest, cutest feminine frames. Not at all saying its the person you're with, just some need conditions, theologies or syndromes (like PMS), as a built-in excuse to justfity acting like an impossible, unrelenting b****.

Its a human condition. Dont need to blame yourself thinking you did anything wrong to initiate that.
