Traj, I have the best of both worlds.

I shoot the roaches in my house with my guns!

It makes the house a mess but at least the roaches stay away! [IMG] [IMG]

Do you really want to argue about this?

I don't use exterminators. But I want to make something clear - I have no interest in dissing anyone because of their choices to hunt, eat meat or exterminate.

I know that a lot of people feel uncomfortable with those beliefs or simply choose not to and that is fine by me. In fact, the vast majority of my friends and relatives eat meat, so it isn't all that odd for me.

I choose to do what I do for myself. If someone else does it too or ask about it, that is great. I just don't want anyone here to think I am forcing my beliefs on them. That is the last thing I want to do.

I don't exterminate, either. I take bugs outside.

Sometimes, however, my dog gets some before I can, they then die in a pool of saliva or get sucked up his nose.

    Sad. [IMG]

A little off topic -- well actually on the origional topic.

Just curious, from someone who has never hunted. Everyone here has mentioned using rifles for hunting deer. When would one use a shotgun with buckshot?

dc sports - If you are hunting deer with the express purpose of eating the meat, you would tend to not use a shotgun. Too many pellets in different parts of the meat.

dc sports- You have to use a shotgun up here in Iowa. Rifle hunting is illegal due to the wide open nature of the land. Most hunters up here use slugs instead of buckshot for the reason bobrek mentioned.

    grummett,

Could you explain that a little more? I've never heard of that. Of course, I haven't hunted much, but I was just wondering how "wide openness" would negate the use of rifles.....

Missed rifle shots have no natural obstructions like trees, hills, etc. to stop them up here. The farmland up here is flat as a tabletop for miles and miles. Shotguns have a killing range of, more or less, 50 yards. Rifles can kill over hundreds of yards. My guess is that somebody got shot way back when and they outlawed their use.

DREAMer: Just a thought as I used to target shoot when I was young...

The wide open spaces leave solid bullets to travel for long distances especially if the rifle happens to be pointed up an incline of any type.

Shotguns, on the other hand, disperse their load quickly and slow down just as quickly leaving them to fall a much shorter distance than one from a rifle.

I don't know if this is the case but it came to mind when you asked the question.

    Jeff & grummett,

I sorta figured that was the reason. I just thought it was weird.

If a shotgun only has a range of 50 yards, then you obviously have to get pretty close to the game. I guess I'm just used to people talking about a shot they took from 100 yards away or more.
