I cannot even see him starting for a top 10 team in the league and yet this dude is supposed to go #1?
Some players look lethargic on the floor, but Gay flat out disappears. He's like Stromile Swift in Travis Outlaw's body.
He has the body and every skill you could possibly want. That's what makes him special. Of course, the fact that he disappears and appears to not give a crap is what makes him a huge question mark. That makes him a legit option at number one in this year's draft as pretty much all the other options have as big or bigger questions.
God he reminds me of another player that had so much potential and was supposed to be the Number 1 pick in a draft a few years back but character issues, desire to win, and fire came into question... "Who is Eddie Griffin" Rings a bell doesn't it?
As far as I know Gay doesn't routinely assault teammates or have severe mental issues, so I wouldn't go too far down the line with the Griffin comparasons.
the guy has all the skill, athletic ability, and potential in the world.......but he doesn't play hard everynight. he simply plays when he wants to play. he has dissapeared big time in the tournament, and i think anyone who takes him in the top 3 in the draft is making a HUGE mistake. he is NOT ready for the nba. period.
I have watched lots of Uconn last month and I don't remember him doing anything special. He is athletic but at this stage I will take Swift (although terribly inconsistent playing Gumpy system) over Gay any day.
Rudy Gay, IMO, will not amount to much. There have been many project players such as him, and he doesn't look any different. The major similarity with him and those other busts are their passion. This guy does not look like he cares about basketball at all.
Many said the same thing about Marvin Williams last year. I actually agree with you on Rudy Gay, but his body language and inconsistency bother me. His disappearing acts in college don't speak well for the NBA but his talent and skills are amazing.
Look, after all the bad stuff I said about him, I would definitely take this guy at the 7-9th pick that we'll be getting. He is just not worth the #1-3 pick IMO.
Rudy had a pretty good game yesterday - without him, the game doesn't even go to overtime. He probably does need another season of college ball, but if the Rockets have a chance to grab him, they should jump on it (same goes if Tyrus Thomas is available when it is our turn to pick).
To me, the main thing about Rudy Gay is....well, something about his expression. You don't see intense concentration in his eyes. He's just kinda...out there on the floor. He's the really talented kid in a pick-up game who doesn't exert himself, who's better than the next guy but feels no need to prove it. Unmotivated.
Rudy Gay doesn't have "character issues" like many of the comparisons made. The kid has a clean slate, and has been criticized for not taking over games, but I think that's unfair. His major, major flaw at this stage is that he can't create his own shot. As a result he relies on his teammates to set him up. The problem with that on Uconn this year was obvious: they had one guy who could create shots for others and that was Marcus Williams. When Williams was bottled up or not passing, Rudy Gay didn't get good looks, simple as that. He's a great shooter from all over the court, can block shots, get steals and rebound with the best small forwards. He can't dribble well enough to create for himself and this kills him on a team full of guys like Uconn. That team's been fundamentally flawed since day one with their lack of creators and it was only a matter of time before this came back to haunt them. His lethargic look and play appears to be a product of his frustration with the college game, where his lack of handles is exploited every day by quick-handed smaller guards. It also certainly doesn't help that Calhoun never allows his players to get a rhythm going when they struggle. I think Rudy Gay can turn it around and be a great player in the league, all he has to do is learn to create his shot and he'll be dynamic in the league.
