I've really been enjoying a german Gewurtz from Valckenberg. it's a bout $8/bottle and it's just tremendous. not unlike a reisling, less floral than an alsatian, with more mineral overtones. basically, you can spend anywhere between $10-$15 and get an excellent alsatian or german white, reisling on Alsatian. for $15-$20 you can get an absolutely superb Alsatian Gewurtz. try the Mann, Hugel.

German reisling is one of the great food wines, particularly good with spicy food, asian, indian, etc.

-Kabinett is the least expensive but really superb value. just say no to Blue Nun, tho!

You may have "heard" my babbling in Buck's thread about Kanomwan (Thai food), and we always bring a bottle or two of Reisling with us. That's my favorite thing about Riesling.....you can find GREAT ones for twenty bucks or so; and a great Riesling is truly something special. One of the few whites a truly love.

I've already got the baby back ribs, I'm thinking I'll do a brisket as well on the smoker along with some fresh corn on the cob. I might do some wings on the smoker as well (an idea from this thread). In addition, we'll get a keg for the kegerator and make some homeade salsa & queso w/ a crap load of chips, etc. I'm planning on making some homeade barbeque sauce too (BTW, I'm taking any tips on how to tweak it) Anyway, there will be plenty of grub being served over off 47th St.

Both games in the cold chilly outdoors. Most superbowls go over 38 points, and I think it will be an over game.

Turnovers, big plays...and could be a blowout.

POINTS POINTS POINTS...that is what I will be rooting for.

there's an excellent, non-techie, wine column in the WSJ each friday- they're major riesling fans. haven't tried too many "new world" rieslings, although i had a decent one from ny state not long ago. several years ago i spent some time in alsace and drove down the "route de vin" which is about 90 kilometers from strasbourg through colmar to mulhouse. something like 200 winerys- absolute heaven if you love gewirtz, riesling, pinot blanc, etc.!
