I think it is more of the Rockets wanting to get themselves under the LT. Singleton and Ewing packaged with several of our other expiring or soon to expire (in 2 years) contracts would push us well under the LT. It would also give us more flexibilty to resign Artest to a larger contract in the future if we choose to do so.

Butler's and Reed's contracts come off the books at the end of this year for a toal of +$4M. If we dump a few other contracts and resign Deke. We should be able to offer Artest abvout $12M and not hit the LT threshold next year.

Hinrich's contract is too big to justify moving Alston to get him. It's not like it would be a huge upgrade. The Rockets just need a vet to back up Alston and one of those should be available.

Butler's already off the books as his last year was a team option. Rockets might be in a situation where they lose a couple of valuable players for less than they are worth to get under LT.

    Alston, Brooks, Francis
    McGrady, Barry
    Artest, Battier, Harris, Reed*
    Scola, (Landry), Dorsey, Novak
    Yao, (Deke)
= 14 players (not including Reed waived)
Team Salary: $67.136M (not including Landry & Deke)
Under LT by $4.014M (to split between Landry & Deke)

    Salary Dump:
    Hayes
    Head
    Singletary/Novak
    Ewing/Novak

Draft Rights (Most will need third team for trade):
    Atlanta, David Andersen PF/C
Portland, Petteri Koponen PG, Joel Freeland PF/C
San Antonio, Tiago Splitter PF/C (1.7 TE)
Orlando, Fran Vazquez PF/C (3.3M TE)
OKC, Serge Ibaka PF (3.2M & 1.8M TEs)

    Possible destination for Hayes?

I don't think there's any chance of trading Rafer Alston. He was the undisputed leader of this team last year and now, with his relationship with Artest, he becomes indispensable.

Why would you want to trade Hayes? He's a great defender on an affordable contract. As your 4th or 5th big, you don't get much better value than that.

I'd like to see Singletary make it to training camp. He's better than a lot of you give him credit for.

Did they change the CBA and nobody told me?

Last time I checked, you CAN NOT combine a TE with a player in exchange for one player.

It must be divided up into two seperate deals, one player for player and one for the cost of the TE.

Otherwise, the player being traded for with the TE must match the TE's amount.

GOd knows we have gone over this time and time again, and still people think they can combine the TE with a player for a trade.

So hang on - what are you saying?

The TE that Sacto will get out of this trade will be useable only on its own?

Don't most teams let TEs lapse anyway? Is the remote possibility of picking up a $2.4m player enough of an incentive for Sacto not to waive these 2 guys themselves?

I think Singletary and Ewing Jr are like those cheap products attached in the promotion pack which you find in the supermarket. You don't need them really. But you'll buy a promotion pack with the same price.
You don't know whether you'll use them. It's not important anyway.

It is my understanding that the TE can not be used with a player in a trade. It *may* be used in two simultaneous deals that are introduced to the public as one big deal, but as far as the league is concerned it is two different deals.

It is my recollection that a majority of teams that acquire TEs in trades end up letting them expire. You hear of some being used from time to time, but right offhand I cant think of any recent ones.

There are some other gotchas that we dont really need to expand on at this time, adn honestly one of the better cap guys would be the guys to ask. I'm pretty good on general CBA things, but a bit fuzzy on the little details. (and there are TONS of them in the CBA)

Unfortunately, few of them still post in here these days. GATER, heyp, and aaeliott were the real cap gurus.

There is one big one at least in recent memory: I think Rashard Lewis' TE was used to absorb Kurt Thomas' salary from PHX along with a couple of picks.

It's a neat thing to have around if there are teams just over the luxury tax limit and you have some room under it. Use the TE to absorb a salary and you can probably get something from the other team (cash, picks, etc.)

    oh, and btw

The way I figure it, Sac is in the middle of a MAJOR youth movement, young players can be signed cheap, and the amount of cap space freed up by the max difference between incoming and outgoing salaries in the Artest trade would allow them to possibly sign a couple of players at positions of need.

They have little to lose right now playing young guys to see how they develop, everyone and their brothers know that Sac isnt winning nothing this year. The fans already know it and they are resigned to watching a young team grow for a season or two.

Thats the big reason they are so happy to get Greene, most of them recognize there is no guarantee Greene ever fulfills that potential, but they want to go along for the ride to find out. How could things get worse for them really?

    EDIT:

Ill have to take your word on that one Carl, while I did think for a moment, I ddnt give it *that* much thought ;)....thanks for the correction.

Any thoughts on the question at hand?

My guess is that Daryl Morey is holding Patrick Ewing Junior hostage until his dad convinces Uncle Otis and Uncle Stan into trading for him and rescue him from being condemned to a life of bench warming, donut fetching, and being Ron Artest's personal bith.

I think you are right about it. You can't combine a $2.5 million TE with a $3 million player in order to trade for somone who makes $5.5 million.

You can, however, use the $2.5 million TE to trade for somone making up to $2.6 million and trade your $3 million player for someone making, say, $3.5 million. On its face it looks like the $2.5 milion TE and the $3 million player were combined to trade for 2 guys who make a combined $6.1 million, but the math is done separately.

You are right about TE often gone unused, but these can be handy if you are absorbing salary and trying to get either a low 1st round pick or a 2nd round pick out of a team in salary dump mode. TE goes unused often because the team got the TE in the first place because it was the one trying to dump salary.

    1. Get a partner team in Eur.
    2. Trade Head,Hayes,2nd round players for cash.
    3. Get a decent PG from Eur.

Good deal, can we do that?
