to me, this is what the republican party should be all about. i think if you ask people what a republican stands for it would be something like this, but most mainstream republicans have gone away from this philosophy.

its like ron paul says - "i didnt leave the republican party, the republican party left me".

I think the Republicans need some new blood to help them achieve the friendship, good behavior, and decency towards one another that is such a key aspect of the democratic party.

Many of us conservatives are dismayed with what Bush has turned out to be; a big government, big spender, religiously conservative President. That isn't what we voted for, but it's what we got. McCain is an odd case. Yes he is similar to Bush in a lot of ways, but they are a lot of things we conservatives don't like about Bush.

I think the idea behind supporting Hillary over McCain is that she can do less damage to the country than he potentially could and/or the long term fate of the Republican party.

Not to be an ass, but come on. To make that big of a mistake you'd need to be either willfully ignorant or just plain delusional.

I don't buy the above rationale for a second.

Are you serious? You think in 2000 when he was elected people expected him to become what he has become? Yes the religious part was out there and fine, but I don't people really expected this from him. He was the establishment candidate, the true conservative.

Maybe in 2000. But 2004? That's just silly. By that point he was a bigger spender than any democrat ever.

Right, but the whole push behind him in 04 was the whole "Maybe you don't like everything I stand for, but at least you know where I stand." Conservatives didn't vote for him in 04 because they loved him, they voted for him because John Kerry made them squirm. It will be the same reason many of them will hold their breath and vote for McCain.

Agree. Pushing that thought a little further to this year's Presidential race, the Clinton's could pull their race shenanigans because, once Hillary has the nomination, where else can the black vote go? Now that McCain has the GOP nomination, where can conservatives go? That's why I firmly believe people of race, creed, color, sex or political mindset should inhabit BOTH parties. It makes for big tent government regardless who wins.

I agree with all that, but I actually wanted a more conservative candidate to win the Repub nomination. Neither of which are.
