    Too early for stats comparison.

LOL. That's one of my favorite quotes. A nice, overgeneralized analysis of use of statistics to paint an entire art of persuasion as faulty. Often the result of stat abuse.

    Comparing fast break points:

    Code:
    [B]Yr HOU OPP DIFF[/B]
    06/07 7.4 9.6 -2.2
    07/08 10.5 13.2 -2.7

Here's the fast break points breakdown for last season:

Yes, we're scoring more on the fast break early in the season. But we're also giving up more points, and the differential is overall worse. Hopefully by season's end, we can make that a positive differential.

more rebounds come from Yao got more offense rebound, Bonzi became effective and Scola is a better rebounder than J.H. But the game with Spur do make rocket's rebound stat look better.

I always enjoy Tango's analysis. 6 games is good enough, if not great, sample size for some meaningful analysis. The only skewness of the data is that this is the beginning of the season. Teams are not in mid-season form yet.

Anyways, very encouraging signs. The defense is still here. The offense will improve given more time. Right now, we are winning on sheer talent of Yao, TMac, Bonzi, and Battier at the offensive end. Wait till they gel. Wait till Scola gets adjusted. Wait till James and Head finds their shots again. This team can dominate.

It is still too early to judge Adelman's offense. But I think it has already delivered partially on his promise, i.e. making life easier for our two superstars McGrady and Yao.

Yao's increase energy has to do with not having to show on pnr defense and spending less time wrestling in the low post. TMac is playing loose. You can tell by his jump shots and his willingness to attack more.

Thanks Tango for your thoughtful analysis. I find it disturbing that most of your detractors are taking shots at your method when few of them have ever posted threads anywhere near the quality of this one. The whole world is a critic, as they say.

Seriously, folks, we should be encouraging posts like these, not criticizing them. Unless you've got a time machine and can provide us with statistics from the future, complaining about sample size is pointless. We must draw conclusions from the data we have, and that data right now is 6 games. If you want to offer a counter-argument, do the statistical work and post a complete analysis. Otherwise you accomplish nothing except scaring off our quality posters!

I'd like to see how stats through 6 games of the season last year compared with the final stats for the season, for each team.

That might give an idea of how predictive these stats really are.

    He did, sort of:

(not directing to durvasa) Folks, listen to bejezuz. Come up with something better yourself before you criticize, or at least give some intelligent critique instead of just dismiss some good analysis.

What I find more surprising is how Battier is almost as bad... Yet Luther is number two?

Also, does the "Own" and "Opp" mean the players and opposing teams or the players and his opposing players production? If it's the latter it would make more sense as there seem to be more perimeter players with good production than centers.

The reason why this is so is because you guys don't know what the stats mean.

What do you expect, same line up from last year. And with Rafer playing much worse than last year.

    But with better bench.

I mean we'll use Rafer only as a passer, just to distribute the ball to Tracy or Yao. Last year he played 40mpg and he was shooton' as a scorer. Now it's time to stop it!
