Win a Chance to Get Beaten Up - in a Video Game

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The good news: video game fans have a chance to star in an upcoming game release.

The bad news: your digital likeness will be beaten with lead pipes and body-slammed into concrete pool decks.

British video game publisher Eidos on Friday said it has struck a deal with games news company IGN Entertainment Inc. to sponsor a contest in which the winner will appear as a character in the upcoming game 'Backyard Wrestling: Don't Try This at Home.'

The game is set for release this summer on the PlayStation 2 (news - web sites) and Xbox (news - web sites) game consoles, and the contest, which requires only a name and an e-mail address, is open to anyone age 18 and up.

Eidos said the contest runner-up will receive a lineup of 'Backyard Wrestling' DVDs, in which competitors abuse each other with anything they can find. The Web site for Backyard Wrestling Inc. shows a number of competitors lying on the ground, beaten and bloody.

Separately, Eidos said it had signed a deal with Island Records for an official in-game soundtrack featuring some of the top hard-core rock music acts, including Sum 41, Slayer, and the Insane Clown Posse.

I'm all for X-Box. It's a much more advanced system.

As for all of the criticism about variety -- that arguement is going away quickly. Yes, PS 2 has more games -- it's an older system, and has a biger library. However, almost all new games are coming out on all systems. Plus, X-Box is starting to introduce "Platinum" editions of some classics. If it's come out in the past two years, it will probably be available on either system. Moving forward, most will be available on both.

There are a few platform specific games, but I'll bet there will be fewer of these going forward.

If you are getting a platform now, the library shouldn't be a factor. You won't be wanting the 'oldies but goodies'. You'll want the newer and better games.

Question: Have the rumors about X-box lite gone away? If not, is there anything mroe definite about what this is and can/can't do.

I'm a Gamecube owner and am very satisfied with it - although I wish the sports games were a little better. I'd be interested in an X-box lite. Yall are probably thinking I'm a pansy now, but I don;t want a big ole $4000 dollar machine (exageration, I know), but wouldn't mind playing stuff like the Halo's and sports games out there.

I wish Nintendo would just go the way of Sega and only put out software, or their next system better be backward compatible and have DVD functionality...

    Definitely agree

Why. So you can have a cheap DVD player. Ninetndo sells for less and doesn't try and get you with a gimmick like a DVD player. Buy a real one.

Broke guys like me can't afford a system and a real DVD player. That's why I didn't even consider going for the cheaper Game Cube.

I'm not sure what you are talking about. You can get the real thing for $200. The only accessories you 'need' (I'd reccomend) would be a second controller and the DVD attachment. There are some really good packages available at Sams, Wal-Mart, Target, etc.

You can also get a used / refurbished machine from Game Stop.

getting any future resident evil games. great graphics, great sytem.

PS2-nba street, Medal of Honor, SSX, metal gear SOL, onimusha 1, onimusha 2, GT3, GTA3, High Heat 2002, and probably a couple more that i cant think off.

getting ?. if the new metal gear game is PS2 only then ill get it but nothing on the horizon interests me.

go with the x box, then buy a gamecube and wait for a PS3.

Now see, red....red is a real gamer. :D

As for the whole DVD thing, it's not a big deal. Good DVD players are cheap enough now that it doesn't matter, and using your system as your DVD player is a bad idea on the whole.

Personally, I own a GC and a PS2. I wouldn't mind an XBOX, but there wasn't enough yet to draw me to the 200+ price tag. Maybe in the future, but I'm happy with what I have to play now.

Plus, I'll spend enough money on Mario Kart, F-Zero and PS RPGs as it is. :D

Just to expand on this, Sony is realesing a new version of the PS2 that will come with the network adapter and will play progressive scan DVD's. The new version will be $199 and the current version will be $179. I haven't heard if they will continue to ship the current PS2's or if they will be gone once they have sold out what is currently in stock.

I have to disagree with this, all the consoles are still getting exclusives, and will continue to. And don't forget the first party games like Halo, Gran Turismo, or any of Nintendo's franchises. Those games will never appear on a competitor's system. And all three console makers are always trying to get third party games to be exclusive, like Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, and Grand Theft Auto. If you want to play those then you have to have the right system. For me the library is the main reason to buy a system.
